Someone hit my parked car & chipped my paint - checked security footage
Okay, reverse parked my car in gated parking lot last night around 8:30PM. Come out today, walking towards the car I see white. Think it's bird dropping above my front right wheel well. F$#King chip, to the bare metal. No car parked beside me. Left some white residue on the body panel and just a hint on my right mirror.
Go the my leasing office, request to check security footage. Camera is point from the front of the lot outwards to the far back corner where I park SO NOBODY HITS ME. 10:30PM looks like a current generation RAV4 drives in to the parking spot right beside my car. Drives into the parking spot. Reverses out of the spot, and then repositions himself in the same spot. I'm waiting on this guy to come home. I want to take a look at his car, hope there's red paint on it, and then contact him. What is the damage to the car? Car has about a quarter sized chip to the bare metal + another 1/2" or so that can be scabbed off and is barely holding on. Slight dent in the chip as well, enough for the eye to see the car has been bumped. Next question - how do I go about contacting this person. What are my best steps to protect myself if he tells me to piss off and get lost, saying he did nothing? Security footage is grainy, my car is hard to see because of the distance, and then obscured by his RAV 4. Obviously the fact he reversed in and out is pretty evident he's responsible. Will pictures of his car have any benefit if there's paint on it?

$541 for the first quote. I really hope the RAV4 owner admits to this...

Quick, take multiple pictures from all sides of the chips on both cars. Then take a meter stick or ruler (meter stick is better) and use it as a scale to show in the pictures that the marks on both vehicles are at the same height.
Height is a big issue. Someone in a YMCA parking lot once started screaming that my mom had hit this woman's car when backing out of her spot. The only clear evidence supporting my mom was that my mom's car could not have hit that car at that height (it was lower than my mom's jeep). |

thats so f*cked up. people these days -__- i hope it works out and he owns up to it. tell him you have footage of him hitting your car and you just want to resolve this without issues or informing insurance companies and see if he will just agree to pay the ticket. if not then take it to your insurance company and let them sort it out. give them all your info and the video if you can get a copy. do what carma said too, take pictures that show the height of the damage marks. that will help prove that it was in fact the rav4 who hit you.

Happened to me at work(!) Can't prove it - nobody fessed up. Went to a reputable body shop in the area and now is good-as-new and guaranteed. Uninsured motorist coverage handles it (minus the deductable). Ended up costing me about $250 since I had to pay for a rental and I was out of my ride for about a week.
I don't park in that area of the lot anymore.

Keep in mind that most drivers are oblivious. He/she may not even know they hit you.

Hi, My name is XXX, I drive a red scion. I came out of work to see damage done to my car. I checked the video surveillance at my work... On the video, licence plate xxxx hit my car at 10:31pm on 12/8/14. I took it to the body shop, the estimate is $541.
Wait for response.... -bbuuutttt..... Its on video. I know we both don't want to deal with the insurance companies, I am willing to take XXX. response 1. get paid, and you are giving him a discount, therefore he should want this option. response 2. screw you! I will give you a day to think about it. I don't want the full amount. I am asking for xxx. Can I have your phone number? response 3. SCREW YOU!! I will contact the proper authorities as a HIT AND RUN and my insurance company to resolve this issue. ARE YOU SURE you don't want to take care of this now?(you want him to take the easy road, aka pay up) response 4. LET ME SEE THE VIDEO. It is our company policy NOT release video unless mandated by the police or by a court order. Don't you want to take care of this? (you want him to answer yes and pay up). I don't want to, but I will be forced to contact proper authorities to get this video released as evidence. Good luck. |

Will do. The owner of the RAV4 still has not arrived in the lot. I will assume he is going to return around 10:30 PM as last night.
Fingers crossed, damage on his car shows so that I can document it. I'll leave him a polite note informing him I'd appreciate him contacting me. I'll leave anything threatening out of it, I'll make the assumption they may not have known. If he fails to contact me within a reasonable time period tomorrow, I'll contact the loft office and request contact on who drives the vehicle saying I need to file a police report. I'll assume that they'll then provide me with the driver's information. |

Damn it, just checked the lot...no RAV4. I'm wondering if I mistook the RAV4 for this white 2005ish Hyundai 4 door SUV that's parked in the lot. I'm dealing with dark footage.
If that's the case, I might be screwed. This Hyundai appears to be driven by some drunk, because every side of this car appears to be fucked. Side panels are crumpled 360 around the car with marks on every corner of every bumper or protectant. I measured my car's damage at exactly 25", this car is just a shit storm F$#K it, tomorrow I go into the leasing office and tell them blow that image up till I get a plate and double checking if it's a RAV4 or this POS Hyundai. I'm calling the owner on the spot. In the mean time, I'm drinking a 5th of gin. I'm not working, so I'll check the lot here around 12:30-1AM and see if there's a RAV4. |

Find out who hit your car, then pay a musician to wait for them in the parking lot and serenade them with this song
[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QiDD_20bsM"]this song[/ame] ...when they approach their vehicle. Make it a quartet for extra creepiness. |
