Auto headlight weirdness

Okay, so how do the the auto headlights work? I have a Premium car, and it seems like the headlights don't shut off normally when shutting the car off at night.

One night I remember the lights shutting themselves off after several seconds after locking the car when going to the store, but the manual makes no references to coming home lights.

Then last night I pulled the car in the garage (auto lights were on), and shut the car off (but I had left the key in the ignition and not locked the doors). Many minutes later the headlights were still on.

I know that after 20 minutes the battery will kill power to the lights to prevent draining power, but that isn't supposed to be a normal function.

How are they supposed to work?

The Manual on Auto headlights:
Quote:
The headlights, park- ing, daytime running lights and so on turn on and off automatically. (Vehicles without a key- less access with push button start system: When the engine switch is in the “ON” position
Vehicles with a keyless access with push but- ton start system: When the push-button igni- tion switch is in “ON” mode)

Why did you leave the keys in the ignition in the garage? My guess is the system is set up to leave the lights on if the car "thinks" you're going to need them again relatively soon. For HID bulbs, it's not the best thing in the world to turn them on and off repeatedly.

If you take the keys with you and click the lock button twice it'll immediately shut off the lights.

This. Or lock it once and wait ~30 seconds. They stay on to provide light for you to walk up to your door.

Man, if only they provided a book that described all the features of a new car... Even better if it came with the car! Or if Subaru placed it online! They could even name it something cool like, "Owner's Manual" if they wanted to be really wild...

They should shut off 30 seconds after you turn off the car, but I found this part of the manual which makes it seem like leaving the key in the ignition might just leave them on.
Quote:
In the following conditions, the headlights and the other remaining lights will
go off automatically after 20 minutes in order to prevent the vehicle battery
from being discharged:
●The headlights and/or tail lights are on.
The key is removed from the engine switch (vehicles without a keyless
access with push button start system) or the push-button ignition switch
is turned off (vehicles with a keyless access with push button start system).

You do realize that I included in my original post what I found in the manual, right?

Yeah I saw it, but I was browsing through the online portion of the manual this weekend and remembered reading about this. Just giving you a hard time! :happy0180: Have you registered at Subaru.com for MySubaru? If not go register, put in your VIN and you can do keyword searches through the online .pdf manuals that can assist in finding the info like this.
