how to get an FR-S - have 3 cars, 2 need to go
So, I have wanted an FR-S since before we even saw the concept. now that its actually available, i have been going MAD trying to figure this out.
I have a 2013 altima that sucks but i am about $5k upside down. a 2013 accord that i love to death and its a lease thats over-miles and been hit twice. and my AE86 that i have pretty much decided will get sold to make room both in the garage and financially for the FR-S as the new money sponge. HELP??? HOW do i get an FR-S!??! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() am i just financially pigeon-holed? if i could get rid of the altima somehow, i would be down. i was going to use money from the sale of my AE86 to pick up some goodies for the FR-S (coilovers, wheels, intake/exhaust, etc.) but i suppose i could use money from that to pay down the altima and hopefully use as a trade in? are there any members here that are dealers/salesmen that could help me out with some advice? is there a way to get rid of the altima and NOT have to use money from the AE86? aside from uh, "gee i dont know officer, i came outside and my car was on fire?" I'm literally on the verge of selling bodily fluids here...

Honestly, looking at your current car finance situation, I wouldn't even THINK about another car. Take care of your shit first.

Few cars are worth the financial hit and the frs isn't one of them. They are neat cars but there are ways to have as much fun without throwing money away. Those ways just don't involve an frs.

If you don't own those cars outright, then don't even bother.
It's going to be a huge waste for you no matter how you slice it |

As a salesman your royaly fucked. There's a lot of negative equity and it's gonna be hard to get financed. My question is if you really wanted the FRS then why did you go for an Altima and then leased a 2013 accord? Sounds like you bought out of impulse.

bought out of necessity because i have twins and no idea when the FR-S was going to hit the market.
altima is my wife's car, accord is my daily. as for keeping the AE86, i wish i could. it just sits in the garage. havent had a chance to smog it with 20v. im currently deployed. so i guess i'm just screwed for a while. ok just making sure. thanks for the help.

It's not impossible, just have to have a big down payment. I'd around 9-10k to at least cover your negative equity in the altima plus 10% for down since banks like to see around that number.

Whether or not an FRS is worth a financial hit is highly dependent on the individual who is in the market. Seeing you own an AE86 and deal with all the hassles it came with (assuming you built>bought it). I'd like to assume you're one of the true guys with the Toyota lineage.
Sadly, I would never lease a vehicle just because you don't truly own the vehicle. The conditions you have stated for the Altima and Accord aren't good ones. I wouldn't recommend you putting an ad up for someone to take the lease over as you're going to take such a large hit it wouldn't be reasonable to you or a child. The only vehicle that people may have their eyes on is the ae86. If you are set out on selling your ae86 to buy goodies for the FRS, you may want to alter that to selling it to get a larger down-payment on the FRS. When you financial situation looks better, you can then use your discretionary income for awesome toys. (Not only that but you can take your time and skim the used classified here and get some amazing deals -- even local pick-ups to save you the shipping! You would be surprised at what you find on the forum near you.) As I stated earlier, Whether or not an FRS is worth a financial hit is highly dependent on the individual who is in the market. The problem is, You're not IN the market, you want to get into the market and your current financial situation isn't providing you this opportunity. Waiting isn't all that bad, you might get the perfect FRS you want in later 'special' editions! Or a nice one will appear used that meets your criteria! (including all the toys you wanted ) Don't lose hope!

Don't drive the accord and let the miles go under(or return the lease for a loss, you can't drive a car when you aren't there so why keep paying?). You obviously don't love it to death if you are willing to get rid of it, plus its a lease. Pay off the altima, the wifey needs something to drive, and your twins need something to ride in. Sell the 86 for a high-ish price and sit on that price until you return from your deployment(or try to sell to military friends). Take care of all that,, then buy used/salvaged/cheap frs when you return. Prices for frs are dropping, and 86's are going up. Not sure if the 30 year rule for smog-exempt still applies, but you could drive the 86 and enjoy it until you find a suitable frs. Plus the 86 price would skyrocket if smog-exempt applies.

I took a huge financial hit to get out of my 2012 Lancer GT but knew I would, was willing to do so and had the income to pull it off. It wasn't a spur of the moment impulse buy though. I looked at several cars and weighed the pros and cons of each deal and the vehicle I knew I would have to keep for 6 years.
We have seen a number of people from this forum alone that have already got rid of their twin and probably took a big hit doing it. So, I guess my point is if you really want to do it there is usually a way but think through all the ramifications before going ahead.

I was in the same boat. I needed a new car in the winter of Jan 2013. I loved the FR-S but it just wasn't in my budget so I picked up '13 Scion tC. Mid 2013 I got a new job and started my search again and in Jan '14 I found a brand new '13 sitting on the lot. After crunching some numbers I ended up doing the number and took a pretty good hit. I lost the down payment plus all the monthly payments (cant remember but probably close to 8-9k). I was luckly and the dealership paid the balance of the tC off. Should've done it 'right' the first time lol. Maybe see if someone is willing to take over your lease, or sell your car privately and try to recoup some of the money you owe on it. Or if you're ballsy, tell the wifey to pay for her car because you want a new toy :P

in a roundabout way, wifey already paid for my corolla.
but yeah i think swarb nailed it for me. either let the accord sit (hard to do since i commute to san diego every day @ 70 miles each way), and my daughter will be starting private school in jan in san diego and wife has to drive her so... i cant take her cuz i start work at 0600 school starts at 0800 so, not gonna work. and although i might not love the accord to death, i love it heaps over the altima. i should have racked up all the miles on the altima but why drive something i dont like? gah, this makes my brain hurt lol and since we would rather keep the accord than the altima, we said "effit" and drove the piss out of the accord. hopefully miles keep off altima in attempt to recoup some value since we actually bought that (@$410/mo). this is why i didnt want a "new" car lol i bought used my whole life and never had these problems haha dammit...
