DIY - Replace Vortech Supercharger Pulley

Hey all,

I helped a buddy of mine change the pulley on his supercharger, before he installs it and thought I'd give a quick tutorial.

What you'll need:

Pulley
Impact Wrench (I used an electric, Harbor Freight one - $40)
Torque Wrench
14mm Socket
Oil Filter Pliers or Strap Wrench (I used a vice grip-type oil filter wrench, thanks for the tip charged86)
Duct Tape
Blue Loctite (or other brand semi-permanent thread locker)

Nice to have:

CLP (I used Ballistol)
Extra belt or small length of belt (gives filter wrench something to bite)
Butane Torch (helps to heat up the bolt if it is stuck)

STEPS

1. Wrap the ends of your oil filter wrench with duct tape to prevent marring the pulley. I used duct tape on my wrench as well as an old belt to grab ahold of.

2. Steps 2 and 3 are interchangeable. Since I had a locking pair of pliers, I went ahead and set this up. Wrap the old belt around the pulley and lock down the pliers with medium pressure.

3. If you have a butane torch, heat the bolt for 15-20 seconds to help loosen things up. I did that, but couldn't take a picture at the same time. Remember, it's probably easiest to do this first if you're going to have to tighten your wrench by hand.

4. Grab your filter wrench that's on the pulley and hold it steady while you loosen the bolt with your impact wrench. I tried doing this with a breaker bar, but I couldn't get the correct leverage with the SC off of the car (YMMV).

5. Finish removing that bolt, washer, other cover (not sure what it's called). Remove pliers and belt from pulley and then slide your pulley off. I had to turn the pulley (pic shows orientation), then it slid right off. This is what you're left with:

6. Grab your CLP (Ballistol) and clean the metal shaft. This one was really gunky, you may not have to clean yours. Ballistol CLP is what I use for my firearms, it (C)leans, (L)ubricates and (P)rotects. I've found it to work very well on all types of metals.

7. Slide on your new pulley.

8. Set cover and washer back on top of pulley, KEEP IN MIND the orientation of these parts. I imagine it could cause some problems if you put them on the wrong way.

9. Put some loctite on your threads. Just a line on top of the bolt will due, it will run and fill the threads. This bolt doesn't thread in all of the way, so I put it a few threads shy of where it torques down to.

10. Carefully thread bolt through pulley, grab pulley with wrench again and tighten with torque wrench. I used 30 ft. lbs., I've seen 25-30 for this, but I like to go on the high side of the scale.

11. Done!
