Criticize my Auto-x driving?
whats up guys.. looking for any advice/critique of my driving.
locally i've been competing in STX class and doing okay, best placement so far was 3rd. I just feel like I'm lacking somewhere. Heres the vid, watch in HD. not much in the way of mods, ST coilovers w/ stock tophats, Federal RSR 245/35/18, Axis Super Hiro in 18.8.5 +38 next year I'm probably going to switch to 17" RPF1 with some v2 RS3's. From what I could see, you weren't looking far enough ahead as there were two events where you had to change your input mid corner (first time was ~55 sec where you had to feed in more steering to stay on course, the second was the last corner prior to the finish where you had to stand on the brakes as a result of having too much speed entering the corner). The other thing is you aren't getting close enough to the 'apex' cones.

Sure. The camera position makes it hard to see how close you are getting to cones in some places, but there are a couple of things I see. The first is that you should try coming into corners a bit wider so that you can accelerate out of them better. In the video, you typically came into the corners too close to the inside and then had to scrub off speed to get through it. Almost always better in a corner to come in slow and go out fast. The other thing I noticed is that you tend to get behind in slaloms. For the most part, you are still turning away from a slalom cone as you pass it; at the point you pass the cone, you should already be turning back toward the next cone. Try this: in a slalom, with hands at 3:00 and 9:00 on the steering wheel, make sure the hand closest to the cone is coming down as you go by the cone. This will ensure that you are turning the car back toward the next cone as you pass each one.
Sometimes going just a bit slower in order to drive a better line yields a quicker time. And as always... look ahead, look ahead, look ahead! |

They need to invest in more cones. That "temporary" track layout sucks!

Yeah, we don't really do the "sea of cones" thing on the east coast. Raises the difficulty level a bit by being given enough rope to hang yourself with rather than being corralled onto a mostly prescribed line. If one can't read the course and find the fast way through, the problem isn't the course/course designer. As for the run, most of it has been pointed out, and I'll echo what @ksconekiller said. OP is behind on slaloms, really overshot the entry on the last left-hander. In the sweepers, you were adding distance to the run. Hard to say how much, but I'll offer this math for a sensation: If we're both averaging 80 feet/sec and carrying the same speed everywhere, but your run is 40 feet longer, you've just tacked on a half-second.

Place the camera on rear quarter window, then we can see where you are looking and your hand placement, along with the course. knipple has it right, look further ahead, and come closer to the cones (usually). Get a course walk with somebody who is quick, with those open courses there is usually opportunities to see the good line. It is a matter of picking out the cones that count.
