Scion Warranty Question

Apologies if this has been covered but I'm seeing conflicting answers. Does the Toyota "Power-train" warranty (60 months/60k) listed in many TSBs cover the FR-S?

I have a 2013 FR-S (VIN 4430) purchased and owned in Southern California. My Toyota Warranty/Service plan is the typical 2 years/24k miles. I did not purchase an extended warranty and I just recently hit the 2 year mark.

Is there an additional power-train only warranty? I see it mentioned in the TSBs. If so are all TSBs under this power-train umbrella covered? For example, the Fuel Pump chirping, occasional idle drops, etc...

In the past the dealer told me many times there were no recalls or servicing for my vehicle. Anytime I said Technical Service Bulletin they acted like that wasn't a covered issue. Inquires about chirping, ECU upgrades, etc. were all dismissed or they claimed they found no evidence of such bulletin.

So being that I'm over my 2 years as of this past July (23,800 miles), do I still have a shot at getting some of my issues resolved or am I screwed?

Thank you

You're getting things mixed up.

A Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) is a reference to fix a specific problem, usually remedied in production. It is not meant for the end user to go back to the dealer and ask to be fixed, because if the problem (symptom) is not present, the fix (TSB) cannot be applied since there is no problem to fix.

Don't go in to a dealer with TSBs telling them how to fix your problem, because no dealer would want a customer coming in telling them how to do their job. If they are incompetent, find another dealer to get work done.

Base warranty for your car should be the same as the BRZ, 3 years or 36000 miles. That covers everything except powertrain.

Powertrain is 5 years or 60000 miles. That's everything related to the powertrain... engine, transmission, differential, axle, electronics related to this, etc.

Your "service plan" is just a complimentary 2 year basic service offering from Toyota.

Extended warranty is just that, extending your base warranty beyond the 3 years/36000 miles limit. If you got a 5 year 100000 mile warranty, then you'd have an extra 2 years and 64000 miles more coverage than what you had to start with.

TSBs are simply bulletins that tell the techs how to fix specific issues; they don't have anything to do with the warranty. So since you're out of warranty you'd be paying out of pocket to fix them. Now, if there was a recall for the chirping HFP or ECU issues you'd be covered...but sadly that's not the case.

If you are experiencing the idle drops from an outdated ECU version and your warranty is up anyway, I'd suggest aftermarket tuning. The Open Flash Tablet's off the shelf maps are based on the latest available ECU version and include the fixes for DI seal failure and idle drops. Plus, there are significant gains even on an otherwise stock car.

And just to reiterate, the chirping fuel pump may be annoying but has proven to not be harmful to the car. It's also not the only car to make this kind of noise, lots of port-injected cars will do it too. There's also no confirmed 100% fix for it for all situations, as people who have had the latest revision of the HFP installed will see the crickets return. The only known way to "fix" the chirps is to use fuel with no ethanol in it, which not everyone has available.

So if my CEL came up at 40k miles, should the dealership find the problem for free because it is under warranty? I recently had my #2 coil pack malfunction and they wanted to charge me for a diagnostic. So I just used my friends obdii sensor to figure it out, but theres still the expense of eventually replacing it.

The way the dealership works, is that they will quote you for a diagnostic and if the diagnostic issue is part of the power train / emissions warranty then you won't be charged that fee. They do that incase it's not covered under warranty, example ( this happens a lot when I worked at the dealership ) a rodent chewed up some wiring, aftermarket component caused the issue, or damaged by objects in the road ect.
