The rimfire thread.

Let's see some rimfires!
And stories. Extra points for
firearms with family history.

Ruger 10/22
Sig Trailside
Izhmash IZH-35M
The autoloaders are all lightly
modded and used regularly.

Savage model 1903
Remington model 12
Mystery rifle-no model
Remington model 12
All my oldies were purchased on the cheap.
None were more than $200 and all required
stock restoration and buttplate replacement.

Nice Izmash...always thought about getting one of those IZH-35M's (maily because they were less expensive than a Walther GSP, Hammerli 280, Benelli MP90, or Pardini SP). Walther GSP or Hammerli 280 would be what i really want though.

Rimfire I have...

Only one I currently have is my first gen Sig 522. I have a Yankee Hill flash hider (hate the birdcage style ones with a passion), Magpull MBUS, and Manticore pistol grip on it. Absolutely my favorite rimfire to shoot to date...with scope it's extremely precise but way too heavy, iron sights or even a holographic sight (I used the EoTech XP3 I had for a while on it) work very well on it. There is a stock adapter for AR platform stocks which replaces the rear hinge assembly that I would like to get and then switch over to a Magpul butstock...problem is they are backordered and not available. Have had zero, zip, nada, no issues running any ammo I've tried in this gun, which has many thousands of rounds through it.

The rimfires I had...

First firearm I ever bought was a Marlin Model 60 off a co-worker (had pellet rifles and pistols growing up...but mom didn't want any firearms in the house...) I reshaped and modified the stock and put on a 'Nice' scope (BSA crap scope...LOL) and had some fun with it. Ended up getting rid of it because cleaning was a chore, it really was too small in foregrip, and I didn't like it's aesthetics... shot excellent though, could get nice tight groups with it at 50 yards with CCI Blazer!

From that I upgraded to a Savage 17 HMR (93R17 BTVS) a really nice rifle! Only issue with the Savage rimfires is they magazine system...just awkward to use. Reworked the thumbhole grip area to better fit to me and I liked shooting it at 100 yards, even if it wasn't even close to the precision of a .308 target rifle ( .17 HMR bullet too affected by wind). Ultimately the .17HMR cartridge was it's downfall, it's a rifle you'd want to shoot at 100 yards but just couldn't get tight groups with and ammo was not readily available nor cheap like 22LR...

I had a Ruger Mark III that I liked except for the Ruger build quality (extremely rough and unrefined), 'fun' takedown to clean it, and stupid mag safety system...oh and it was a jam magnet too...feeding issues with the rounds nose diving into the ramp. So yeah... I didn't like it much.

Replaced the Ruger with a Taurus revolver in 17 HMR... It had excellent accuracy and precision. I just don't think it was properly designed to handle the 17 HMR cartridge, didn't fee safe shooting it knowing the cases all crack at the neck from being unsupported fully like it would be in a rifle chamber.

Rimfire I would want...

Izhmash Biathlon rifle (7-4)...I really like the paddle/toggle lever action concept of those biathlon series rifles.

Have always wanted a Walther GSP or Hammerli 280... just not willing to pay asking prices to get them.

I'm much more a center-fire fan... but the Sig 522 does rock (50 yards or less though...)!

Thanks!

You pretty much just named all the pistols on my wish list! Sadly, I doubt I will ever step up to that level. I don't compete, and like you said, the 35M is a very capable alternative for around $600. I bought mine used and reworked the grips to fit my hand.

I actually bought two of those Izhmash Biathlon Basics when they were first imported. NIB, they were a paltry $260/ea. Those were the most accurate rimfire rifles I've ever owned but I quickly fell out of love with them. It might have turned out different if I'd been competing, but for plinking I found them to be too barrel-heavy, and the stocks were made from the most boring and featureless wood I've ever laid eyes on.

If you get a Sig 522, definitely get the Manticore Arms Scorpion Gen 2 grip...the stock Sig grip sub optimal. Only little issue I have with it is the selector lever on the RH side just digs in to the trigger finger knuckle area when you are gripped up all the way into the receiver like you should be. Really need to modify that lever. But yeah, the Sig 522 is fun to shoot and with a good sighting system (like my Millet tactical Mil-dot scope for my .308 Savage 10FP) can tear precisely through a target at 50 yards when running through a mag...

Nice, clean, precise trigger on it too - even if it has quite a bit of travel, it works great.
