Toyota Trademarks: D4-S Turbo, More turbo, 9 Scion Names

Toyota has live trademarks suggesting turbo. There's the Lexus NX200T which everyone knows about, but the GS200T and IS200T is being speculated.

Then there's the D-4ST and D-4T trademarks, which I'm assuming are variants of the D4-S system found in the twins. Do the T's suggest turbo, the same way they do in the Lexus names?

And finally, Toyota also has about 9 two letter names which are probably going to be the new Scion vehicles, but I doubt all 9 names will survive.

Man I hope you are right!

I keep also hoping they make a 4th Gen MR2...

I have also heard rumors that eventually the Twins will cease in production in their current state and will be updated.

I still think Toyota is going to keep most of their lineup NA, but bring the direct injection to each engine refresh, and save the turbos for select models in need of a power boost (like the entry level IS). Executed a certain way, this is enough to bring pretty high fuel economy numbers with a minimal cost increase. They've already mentioned Atkinson cycle and bigger displacement; this makes good sense, displacement is cheap, making the cylinders bigger is a good use of engine block and head weight.

Using direct injection and "internal EGR" as they say with the 2GR-FSE, they can fit an "Atkinson cycle" cam to the engine and increase the VVTi operating range for almost no cost and get something very fuel efficient that still pumps out a solid 260 horses.

A 4th Gen MR2 would be awesome...I just got an MR2 so I'm steadily getting obsessed with them.

Getting a little off topic from my OP...

Toyota seems to be pretty serious about the 2 sports cars above and below the FR-S.

Apparently, a few General Managers of select dealerships have seen a pre-production model (not a concept) of the sports car greater than the FR-S. They were invited to Torrance to look at it, but weren't allowed to bring cell phones or cameras. My source stated that it is influenced by the LFA's shape, just a bit smaller, but still bigger than the FR-S. They also told me it doesn't look like the FT1. Interestingly, during an event in May for top selling salesmen, it was said this vehicle would be a Scion.

With that said, I've been checking trademarks for possible names of this car. Most people know Supra has been filed. But Toyota also filed 86 shortly after filing FR-S, so we can't really assume anything but we can sure speculate and hope.

But anyways, they only saw the shell of the car; no engine or mechanical info was given.

Back on topic, I'm hoping we can see more turbos in the Toyota lineup. Toyota probably has promising turbo technology. They wouldn't just put turbos in the Lexus vehicles if they weren't reliable. The only concern for auto enthusiasts is if it is actually tailored for a driving experience instead of just being there.

Ah sorry. I'll fix it at home later.

If you go to the trademark search and search Toyota for the first 100 trademarks, you'll see everything I mentioned in the first post.

Ah, it's happening already!

"Since these technologies also improve the engine thermal efficiency at low load areas, it is being considered whether these technologies will overcome the weakness of NA [naturally aspirated] gasoline engines."

They slightly improved the 1NR-FE head, dropped in a fatter intake cam, higher CR pistons, and a new exhaust manifold. Much cheaper than turbo. The Atkinson cycle cam buys them 11% better low load efficiency, and only loses a little bit of torque while keeping max power, so by extension, you could have maybe 20% more displacement (and peak power), but the same fuel efficiency. This is probably what we're going to see until maybe 2021 when they may be forced to finally hop on the turbo bandwagon, since the 2025 fuel efficiency standards are very likely going to need turbos to achieve. Toyota is the best penny pincher in the land of auto makers.

This particular engine makes peak power at 6000rpm, for engines designed to make power at 7000rpm, this formula works even better (although you lose low end torque, but mild hybrid tech should take care of that).

I know the next 2UR-GSE for the RC-F is looking to employ DI and Atkinson cycle... and, higher HP level to boot!
