There's four trim levels for the 86 in Japan: we got essentially 80% GT spec, 20% G spec; the picture you found was from the GT-limited (top of the line).

as always, the US market gets less to keep the price low.
the brz is also missing some nice jdm 'luxuary' items, but not stripped as much as the frs. |

You would have to go with the BRZ Limited to get that. The brz premium has the same controls as the FRS.

The rev counter is all black though. And the radio frame and right airbag cover are plasticky silver instead of platicky carbon.
The picture shown above is of the Toyota GT86 as it is sold all over Europe. One version available here only, but nicely equipped. It's basically the same level as the BRZ limited but without the leather/alcantara and seat heaters (which can be ordered as an option however). |

Keep in mind though the MSRP for Japanese GT is about $32,000 and GT-Limited is about $38,000 with current exchange rate.
The Scion FRS at $26,000 roughly, is mix and match of GT and Limited parts, and as such is offered to Americans. So in essence we are actually the ones getting a GREAT deal. For those that want to pay as much as Japan, I am sure the parts can for the most part, interchange with Japanese models with some modifications on certain areas. The seats will not interchange however, as position adjusters will end up in the wrong side of the seat. Other issues also exist with things like headlights which might point the beam in the wrong direction, but are less problematic on actual use.

I have confirmed with the Chief Engineer Tada, that the swap of Climate controls to the Japanese model DUAL-ZONE panel does require lower dash harness replacement, and addition of a controller and a sensor, as well as start-button (regardless of if you intend to do the wire and box add necessary to get that to work as well)... So its a little more involved in this area...but not impossible either. ![]() The Navigation A/V units are not compatible with the USA cars as mapping and networked features like real-time traffic, social networking, and radio frequencies, require the region-specific infrastructures in respective areas. Good news is that we do get, in the Scion FRS, the door trim accents, and padding, as well as leather red stitched boot, steering wheel, and shift knob. And the upgraded Limited spec dash cluster, as well, with the digital speed indicator and trip computer/mileage/temp displays, and is region specific to the USA with BOTH MPH and KMPH readings.

I'm the say way, I want everything from the Toyota GT 86 Limited, right down to badges, red stitching on paneling and e-brake that the FR-S doesn't have, and especially the push start and dual-climate. I don't want a BRZ, I will not buy from Subaru, especially since the only dealer in my area is terrible and to be avoided at all costs. I'd rather castrate myself with tweezers than buy from them. Even if there was a good Subaru dealer in the area, I have my brand loyalty that I want to uphold, I want the Toyota. Yeah, yeah, it's a "Subaru vehicle" that was built in part with Toyota. They still had a hand in it, whether you like it or not. I want my Toyota and I don't see Scion as Toyota. They have different views, goals, and ways of doing business.
If you really want these options, let Toyota know. Go to toyota.com, toyota.ca, scion.ca, and/or scion.com, go to their "Contact" or "Contact us" pages, they're usually hidden in small print at the bottom of the page, fill out their forms and let them know you want those options and if you want the Toyota badged car, let them know that too. I've been doing this daily on all four sites (with some exceptions, can't always get on the computer.) and I don't plan on stopping. Saying you wish you had these on the car or giving in and taking what they offer will not change anything. Letting them know what you want will. I've already seen them change the contact options to include "conversions and modifications" and "specifications" was changed to "specifications, availability, and pricing" to the list of contact options that were not there in the past three months. They're obviously getting enough people asking that they needed these. I don't see another car in their line up that would warrant a need for a "conversions and modifications" tag. There are others like you out there, we just need to let them know what we want. Don't expect it to be instant either, it may take a year or two before they do something. Fight for what you want, don't lay down and roll over because they say no. We are the paying customers, we keep them in business. Other people, like some in this thread, may be willing to take whatever or say it's not worth the trouble, but if it's what you want, go for it and to heck with what they say.
