New FR-S owner + Stock Suspension.
Hello,
I am relatively new FR-S owner, and this is my first car. I have been lurking the forums about wheels settings and seeing what people have been doing. Will anyone suggest me some basic tips when looking for wheels? I'm not looking to do anything too crazy. What set-up would work, and sacrifice a little bit of performance for aesthetics. I was thinking about getting the XXR 527 18x8.75 or 720 FORM 18x9, would these be bad if i wanted to keep stock or lower maybe with TRD springs later on (don't want to run into rubbing problems & mess with the suspension too too much) OH, and if i do get summer performance tires, will it be completely useless in the winter? Much appreciated! ^_^ Last edited by JARE_ee; 07-22-2014 at 11:08 PM. |

few things to help you out but first, dont buy repilica/knock off parts
next, you can't go that wide in the front because of stock struts. so depending on tire/offset you might have issues with a 18x9. below 50' summer tires are useless. throw snow or all season on your stock wheels. but basic tips for looking for wheels for stock suspension would be to make sure the offset is somewhere in the +45 to +30 range (it depends on what width) and i wouldn't go any wider than a 9' wheel. even putting 17's on it will look just as good on the car vs an 18' if you get hte right width/offset. for a 8.5-9' wheels the appropriate tire width would be a 235-255 (depending on brand). oh and if you're buying used, lowball

@Jive Turkey gave you some good advice there - I'm on stock struts and springs running 17x9+35 RPF1s on PSS 245/40/17. I'd buy the wheels again in a heartbeat but the longevity of the PSS is yet to be determined (if you don't intend to track, then PSS are great for sure).
Even +45 will have a tough time clearing struts on some wheels at 9". I think it's widely believed that on stock power, 17x8 is the way to go. Yes, 18" fill out the gap better but that's a decision you'll have to make re: aesthetics vs. performance. I went 17x9 to keep it versatile (in case boost in the future). The +35 was key to keep my options open to a variety of big brake kits. All the best!

I agree with the first response you received except for one thing. Most wheels nowadays are quality build. Unless you are tracking your car they will work just as well, if not better, than a set of $2000 wheels. With that being said I would stay away from XXRs. Rotas aren't bad and Enkei's aren't as expensive as they're made out to be so just shop smart. No need to be a wheel snob but just stay away from XXRs!

Welcome to the forum!
We have Tein coilovers and Enkei wheels on our FR-S. Makes a considerable difference in the car's handling and feel. I strongly recommend them Nick C.

what the other posters said is spot on though, it all depends on what wheel you like/offset/and tire size. while yes, replica wheels have come a long way, just dont buy cheap parts. plenty of name brand wheels that aren't too expensive. RPF1 is a great example of a light good looking wheel that can be easily done on stock suspension or with springs. |

Found some Rota's GRIDS (white) used with tires for 800 dollars but they are 18x9.5 +38 offset (square), i think with me having stock suspension is really pushing it right? haha i don't really know how it will handle with such tires, if anyone had a similar setup and can give me some advice !

I have those exact wheels, fronts will poke outside the fenders a fair amount, rears are perfect imo. Going to 18s on stock suspension you will make the wheel gap look worse, will resemble a 4x4. If u decide to buy lowering springs later, you will not be able to camber the front wheels, or they will rub the spring perches. If you buy coilovers, and go lower than id say... 1.5" drop, you will have to camber the fronts alot to not hit the fenders ("alot" is subjective, so "imo" its alot)

Also, stock power, 9.5" is alot of wheel for this car. If you plan to stay relatively stock (power and suspension) i would agree w above and recommend 17x8s or similar

) I apologize for not going into greater detail, or addressing the stock suspension questions. RPF1's are a great choice OP, I agree with this member There's a lot of wheel and tire combination information on this site if you search as well Nick C.
