Good books and Reading Material

Hey Guys,

Couldnt find a thread ( yes I did search but maybe I did it wrong ) so I figured I would start one.

Just like the title says, this thread is for us to share good books and reading material for others to check out. Books, articles, blogs doesn't matter, post them up.

I am a pretty avid reader and would love to share a book I have read 3 or 4 times. Shop Class as Soul Craft written by Matthew B. Crawford. It is a great book and discusses the challenges and rewards of working with your hands and compares it to office work. It also talks about when and how America started to move away from the blue collar roots of our country and moved into the Tech / Tech support / service providing trades.

Strongly recommend this book to anyone who is a gearhead, carpenter, laborer, philosopher, or student.

Would like to see some suggestions from others as well

The description sounds like it was probably inspired by the classic Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig, which is all about the concept of quality. You have to follow it up with Lila, a sequel that expands on the themes of the first book. Excellent reads that will often find you nodding your head in agreement.

To contribute something somewhat meaningful though, Phil Jackson's Eleven Rings was an interesting read for me. As a basketball fan, it was interesting to see Phil compare Kobe and Jordan (even though it seems like he threw that chapter in there out of nowhere), but the philosophical parts of the book were what I enjoyed. It's also what a lot of people didn't enjoy about the book

I've been told about this book a few times. Going to have to pick up a copy.

Best part is post #20. That's where the book just takes a complete turn. The drama which follows is some of the best in literature.

I recommend this read also.

I like most writings by Philip K D!ck. He does more short stories, rather than novels, which is perfect for my attention span. A handful of his stories have become movies. Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report, Adjustment bureau. A Scanner Darkly was actually well done as a movie, but like usual the stories/books are better.

A scanner Darkly is one of my favorite movies I have yet to read the book though. I borrowed it form a friend and have it on the shelf but have yet to get to it.

I did not know that all of the above books / movies were by the same author. I need to get into his writing more i guess
