Anything with a thin sole that lets you feel the pedals is fine. I've seen people swear by Kenneth Cole slip-ons. I personally wear Merrell trail gloves or Vibram fivefingers because I have them already and they're comfortable.

I like puma they are reasonably priced and really comfortable. Simpson makes a great shoe as well but you will be paying a lot for the name.

My favorite shoes to drive in are Vans. Slip on or laces, both are great and super comfortable. I also have a pair of Sparco Time 77 Canvas Casual shoes. These are awesome, but they run a bit small, so you have to get a size larger to properly be able to drive with them. I got them a size too small and I have a hard time doing heel-toe with them. Otherwise, they provide the best pedal feel for me and they're pretty sweet looking.

A lot of people seem to prefer Pumas.

I've found Converse Chuck Taylors are great. I use low top, but high top isn't too bad, just less movement from the ankle.

Either those or any Asics tigers. I've had my Macbeths for well over a year now and they're barely show any signs of wear and tear so great build quality. Really good pedal feel, not as good as tigers because they have thinner outsoles, but still really good. I think they're a lot more comfortable than my tigers though. Plus they work with more styles of clothing.

I have to try those, I'm on my second pair of Tigers but by the end of the first year they look pretty rough, definitely not a long lasting shoe.

The Asics/Onitsuka Tigers are the lightest shoes I've ever owned, my Converse feel like combat boots in comparison.

Go for it, man. I used to wear the 81 Ultimate Tigers, and they were great. Amazing pedal feel but I always had the issue of the heel area grabbing on the carpet because of that little lip it has; made it a little annoying everytime I would lift off of the clutch or transition from brakes to the accelerator. Plus, I just found them super uncomfortable for any extended periods of walking (terrible flat feet). By contrast, for a mild trade-off in pedal feel, the MacBeths are super comfortable, have a smooth heel area so no grabbing, and they're a lot more reserved styling wise.

Pumas are good, as are Chuck Taylor Converse hi-tops (get an athletic insole for them, though... you'll need it). The low top chucks just don't work for my feet for long distances... the back edge biting into the heel and such is no bueno.

I've also heard good things about Piloti (sp?) shoes... once they re-release this summer.

I actually prefer my Puma Baskets over my Speed Cats. Just as good for driving and more comfortable for walking.
