Second generation BRZ planned, says Subaru boss

Just read this news and I am ecstatic and really happy about it even though personally I did want it to be one generation so that I could tell everyone that I owned a super rare sports car 10 years down the road.

TOKYO -- Subaru plans another generation of the BRZ, the sporty coupe jointly developed with Toyota Motor Corp., pledged Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, president of Subaru's parent, Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.

Toyota and Fuji Heavy will work on a successor to the current generation, which debuted in 2012, he said.

Without Toyota's volume, it wouldn't be viable for Subaru to build the car by itself, Yoshinaga told Automotive News.

Yoshinaga's comments came in response to an article on the Australian Web site drive.com.au, which quoted the car's chief engineer from Toyota as saying Subaru may not remain involved in the next generation.

"If I were to be told that, I'd pass out," Yoshinaga said. "It's not going to be just one generation."

Toyota sells its version of the coupe as the Scion FR-S. Recent sales of the coupes have been mixed. Through June, sales of the Subaru BRZ rose 6 percent to 4,295, while sales of the Scion FR-S tumbled 24 percent to 7,662. Both vehicles' sales suffered double-digit slumps in June.

If a next generation BRZ is planned, it conflicts with Toyota/BMW collaboration on GT86 successor. Two possibilities: Subaru will use Toyota's new Toyota/BMW platform if BMW allows them, or the next BRZ will be use Subaru's new modular platform. But then the engines are also an uncertainty; will Toyota continue with Subaru's Flat 4 or will they use their new I4? We know a Subaru will never have any other engine on such a car other than a Boxer. And then, is the Toyota/BMW platform able to mount a Boxer engine? If the Subaru SVX successor is a possibility, it is Suabru or a Subaru/Toyota collaboration, think SVX/Supra?

The one thing I found interesting was the sale figures:

"Through June, sales of the Subaru BRZ rose 6 percent to 4,295, while sales of the Scion FR-S tumbled 24 percent to 7,662. Both vehicles' sales suffered double-digit slumps in June."

Ignoring the fact that the wording for the time period is confusing to me (Through June, sales rose, but sales slumped in June???), it's interesting that BRZ sales may be more steady than FRX, albeit at a lower level.

My understanding is that the BMW/Toyota collaboration is on the next Supra (FT-1 concept) and Z4. BRZ/FR-S are at a too-low price point. Also, Toyota owns a part of Subaru, so collaboration between the two likely will not end.
