Installed Q300 last night but wanting more
I got around to install my Q300 I got from a fellow member last night. I was slightly dissapointed as it was quieter than I thought, almost the same as stock. The cold start sound was perfect but it died down afterwards. I have researched beforehand and watched sound clips and I was hoping it might be a bit louder than stock with a deeper tone but I guess I should have done more research.
That being said, I'm still lookig for that deeper and lower growl in my car. I have read that adding a catless front pipe would help wake the Q300 up a bit, how much louder would it be and would there be any rasp? Another alternative would to just get a different catback for around the same price range. I love the deep tone of the N1 but I'm scared it might be too loud and I don't want drone. Would putting the silencers on the N1 remove drone and a bit of sound while preserving the tone? Thank you for any responses, I'm a total newbie and I just want my car to sound good

Yes, it will be louder with a catless front pipe. How much louder/amout of rasp/deepness of the sound etc is VERY subjective.
Considering you live near LA, I would be willing to bet there are hundreds of modified 86s in your area. I would go on your local forum and go to a meet or something to hear some different exhaust set ups. The N1 is an extremely popular exhaust and I'm sure someone local wouldn't mind letting you have a listen for yourself. Otherwise just keep spending money until you're happy. |

The N1 is DRASTICALLY louder...my neighbor has the N1 and I had the Q300. A friend has a catless header and Q300 stock front pipe and its barely louder. The Front Pipe would be the key to making it livelier but how much I dunno for sure based on youtube videos not much. The Perrin looks similar and is a bit louder.

careful with the N1
N1 = drone more offten than not the Q300 is one of the quietest aftermarket CBEs Like bfsnail said go check out some other modded 86's. there are tons in LA. Check out the FT86 SpeedFactory V1. a bit louder than the Q300

I have an invidia catless front pipe paired up with my Q300. There's no drone/rasp that you can notice inside the car. It's slightly louder than stock, but you can still have a conversation with out yelling at the person.
On the outside, a cold start has some rasp (as most exhausts do when cold) but with in 30 seconds it's gone. Also it's a bit louder than stock, but not obnoxious which is what I was going for. I don't wanna annoy my neighbours. Not my car, but here's an 86 with the same set up as myself. Have a listen with ear phones, it seems to sound more accurate that way. Forget the catless front pipe. Go for a catless header, then you'll get the growl you want. Sound is very subjective, but for someone like me (young and somewhat civil), I consider the N1 to be like a 6/10 in terms of loudness. The N1 is loud and deep, not raspy at all. In regards to drone, it's also subjective and biased but generally, there is some drone within the highway cruising speeds of 60mph - 70mph. If I were you, just keep the Q300 and go with a cat less header and a catless front pipe or catless + resonated front pipe. Your car will have the growl without being #dronecentral.

I also have a Q300 and you can really only hear it from idle-3000rpm, and mostly just as your coming off the line. It is too quiet for me but I never intended to run it by itself, I've had a INvidia frontpipe on order since I ordered the exhasut but I don't think there are any availble for a couple more weeks.
I'm really hoping with the frontpipe (catless, res) that it wakes up just enough for me. I don't want this car to be as loud as my previous cars beacuse honestly it doesn't sound that amazing vs my 135i, or built wrx, or other cars.

I used to have N1 paired up with overpipe and berk catted front pipe, but recently switched to q300.
Let me tell you this If you only want to run with only catback, i would say n1 is great once break in in done. If you want to add more exhaust part, n1 might be too loud. I added berk catted front pipe hoping n1 doesnt get too loud, but with op it just made it sound louder than n1 by itself so I decided to change it to q300. After q300 is installed, now i think its too quiet lol. So i ordered tomei front pipe and its coming tomorrow. Once i install it i can tell how loud it is with catless front pipe compared to catted front pipe with both n1 and q300. |

Thanks for all the replies, I understand that the N1 is drastically louder, but what if silencers are on, would that a medium between the loudness of Q300 and N1 w/o silencers or will it still drone and be loud?

Also, any suggestions for other catbacks that might create the sound I'm looking for? I love the sound of the TRD but it's a bit out of my budget at this time.

The catless front pipe will definitely wake the Q300 up a bit. In fact, the stock catback with a catless front pipe sounds pretty good too.
I currently run an OFH, invidia overpipe, stock midpipe with the Q300. It is still pretty tame, but obviously louder than stock. I briefly ran the above with a catless front pipe. Wasn't crazy loud, but I didn't like the catless smell. This is my DD, so the setup I have now works really well. |

Personally, if you really want the TRD exhaust (or any that is more expensive) I'd say to wait a bit long to save the difference and buy what you really want. I'm all about spending the right amount the money the first time, instead of paying for two or three different setups to find one you like. I plan on getting the Tomei 60s. I really like the quality/sound/look of it. The weight is also a big factor for me, since I don't plan on adding an EL header until after my warranty is up and because just a catback won't add a lot of power, I figure that the reduction in weight adds greater benefit in terms of performance.

I would consider going to meets and hearing other types of setups but I don't want to be an annoying pest going around asking people to rev their cars for me haha
