Left and right side view mirrors different?

I just noticed that my right side view mirror has the 'objects in mirror appear closer' message but my left side mirror doesn't have this. My car is second hand... got it with 4k miles on the odo. I wonder if the previous seller neglected to mention an accident where he had to replace the mirror (or more). Can someone check their car and tell me if the two are supposed to be different?

go to a parking lot and check to see if other cars are the same way. heres a hint: they are. if i had to guess, its because that mirror is farther from you so things are going to look farther away on that side. never cared enough to give it much thought though

They are different. All cars are like that. Its ment to keep perspective for judging distance.

passenger side mirror are nearly always convex
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curved_mirror#Uses
Quote:
The passenger-side mirror on a car is typically a convex mirror. In some countries, these are labeled with the safety warning "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear", to warn the driver of the convex mirror's distorting effects on distance perception. Convex mirrors are preferred in vehicles because they give an upright, though diminished, image. Also they provide a wider field of view as they are curved outwards.

Yep. All cars are like that. The driver is farther away from the passenger mirror. The farther you are from the mirror, the farther things will appear. Since you are pretty much right next to the driver mirror...there is no need for it.

The mirror housings are also shaped and sized differently between drivers and passenger side if you compare them...

Whenever I get around to it, I will be custom installing convex race mirrors onto my twin. [have the mirrors, just need to get material for the blanking plates and do the necessary door work] As xmadror pointed out convex gives a wider field of view, which is why I went with the convex ones over the flat since I will basically be halving the viewing area.

Want to really blow your mind? Look at the mirrors from the front and see how they aren't positioned symmetrically.
