Anybody know what this is?
I'm in the process of stripping out the interior in order to lay down some sound deadener. I have everything stripped out from the back seat to the truck. As I was driving around to ascertain the loudest parts of the car, I noticed at idle a strange sound I never heard before. Needless to say, I want the sound gone. I have a stock exhaust, but it makes the rubber in this thing vibrate. What is this? What does it do? And most importantly, is it safe to remove?
Edit BTW, this is in the trunk on each side of the rear panels. |

It is definitely an air vent. Unfortunately, it can be removed thru the truck. The rear quarter would have to come off. I'm just going to rip the rubber out of it so it doesn't flap around anymore.

The vent helps release pressure when you open close the doors/trunk. They are flaps so they close when not in use keeping critters out.
Having felt the rubber, I can't really see it making any signigant noise compared to the rest of the moving parts under the trunk. If it were me I'd see where you get when you apply sound deadning to the rest of the trunk, you may find the sound mat asorbing the vibrations that caused the rattle.

The rubber is a one way valve and it's meant to keep things like exhaust gasses out. Not a good idea to mess with it...
