Supercharger Belt Slip Study
In reading through the various supercharger threads for systems utilizing serpentine drive belts, it seems that the incidents of belt failure rises significantly when smaller pulleys are being used under hard driving conditions.
I wanted to do a simple engineering exercise and try to quantify the actual limits and recommend service intervals for each of the various configurations. Was hoping SC kit owners could chime in and give me some data 1) Which blower do you run? 2) What size diameter SC pulley are you running? 3) Approximately how many degrees of belt wrap the SC pulley has? 4) Which brand/model of belt do you use? 5) Have you ever had issues with the belt breaking or slipping? 6) How often do you change your belt? 7) Does the boost curve taper off at high rpms (either dyno graph or datalog)? Feel free to post in this thread or PM me this information Thanks in advance |

Not sure if srs or trolling.

not trolling at all (thats why i asked people to pm me)....i just see a lot of guessing as to why things happen in these supercharger threads, but nothing quantifiable...i dont need exact data at this point just enough sample data of different set-ups to see correlations (which i am already starting to see)...trolling would be putting up some broscience graph showing belt slip vs car color
these calculations are not hard, i am just not familiar with the other set-ups. if there are local people with different sc set-ups we can just probe their sc pulley layout and tell you for sure...all the other necessary data is needed (ie engineering data from the belt manufacturers and sc manufacturers) anyways...if people arent interested in this study, thats fine...we can just move on Last edited by gmsii; 06-11-2014 at 09:46 AM. |

Why not just delete the identifying data and post what you got? Otherwise, this thread is going nowhere.

1) Vortech V-3 H67B
2) 3.12" 3) ~200* (will try to get more accurate number) 4) Right now a Dayco belt, have a gatorback I might replace it with because of good reviews with supercharger users in other forums 5) Only issue with a thrown belt rib was due to running incorrect belt size, an error on my part. 6) 10K miles on kit, first 5K with stock pulley/gates belt, 4K after that with smaller pulley and failed gates belt (wrong size, belt threw a rib), last thousand miles with dayco of correct size 7) Datalogs show steady/consistent climb in boost. No squealing of belt or perceived slipping Belt that failed was K060962, correct belt size was K060966 Not sure if I will swap on the gatorback belt soon, or just wait for 40K-50K miles

I am sure that owners of Vortech, Innovate, and Jackson Racing kits are interested. My question is why would an employee at Kraftwerks who doesn't use a serpantine belt setup be the one to post this thread? Compiling data for a new Kraftwerks ad campaign?

Would be interested to see the toothed belt data vs serpentine
I like the innovate kit in the beginning but then I started reading about snapped belts and kind of got iffy. Then I saw @CSG Mike running the other kit and saw how much different it was and now I like that kit lol But for me I won't be getting anything until I learn to drive, so I can just fap to threads like these while I learn

An employee from the only supercharger kit company not using a serpentine belt posts about gathering data on why/how serpentine belts are breaking. Classic.

I haven't owned any of the "standard" belt driven SC systems in place not am I FI at moment. However I am a forum whore and pay attention, only (odd) case I've seen of belts being an issue were with Vortech and it seems with proper alignment and things Vortech have made small changes to I am not even sure that is even a concern anymore? I haven't read I a single belt issue or any issue as of yet with Jackson's kit. If something is engineered properly and well tested before public sale it's to be expected there really should be zee concern to begin with???
