Multiple Extended Oil Change Alanysis last one at 16k miles
I read the other posts with oil analysis and wanted to share mine as well even though it wasn’t from this car (my new FR-S).
I am a firm believer that synthetic oil is used and often drained way way before it should be. This would help save precious resources and more importantly get more use $$$ from our costly synthetic oils. I am not a hippy or tree huger I'm just an engineer that likes to push boundaries and I like saving $$$ when you can. The further I pushed the change intervals the more excited I got to see the results. Which I believe are quite impressive. This analysis is from the current life of my daily commuter a 2009 Smart Fortwo Passion. Yes a smart car lol not quite our sports cars but it works nicely as a commuter and if anything the 1.0 3 cylinder engine gets a daily beating more than my FR-S does even when driven hard. The report has every oil change I’ve done on it since it was new. This car is driven 70 miles a day back and forth to the office in midtown Atlanta traffic and at 85mph speed when cruising. I have also taken multiple road trips back home to Chicago as well this car has seen some rough highway use. · The first is the factory fill removed at 5,800 · The second is Mobil 1 at the recommended 10k · Third is Pennzoil Ultra at 12,300 · Fourth at 14,101 with Mobil 1 again · Finally the fifth is with Amsoil at 16,065 My next oil change will be done at 18K (I’m about 8k from that now) this time I went back to Mobil 1 (tired of ordering Amsoil through the website) All of these were done with a Gold Purolator PureOne filter and 0w40 or 5w40(amsoil) weight oil. No synthetic oil filters used either I think those are a rip off as my $5 on sale PureOne proves in the extended oil changes.

For kicks Wal-Mart Supertech in a 530i with 160K on the motor
I wish I could dig up the report that showed 12k use on the Super-Tech oil this one is only for 7500 but still shows its a pretty decent oil. I use it in my lawn tractor and other small engines I care "less" about if you will. I had to add two quarts due to some work I did on the oil filter housing in between the change.

You state "extended oil change" in the title, but you oil change mileage has been:
1st change:5800 2nd change:4200 3rd change:2300 4th change:1800 5th change:1964 You can hardly say "extended" as only the first one is barely over the recommended change interval. When people talk about extended, they are trying to point out that the new synthetic oils should be good for over 10,000 miles if you change just the filter every 5k. I'd say you are wasting your money. |

It was my understanding synthetic oil filters are for maintaining higher flow rates, not filtration efficiency.

"What's different about Purolator Synthetic Oil Filters? Let's start with the media. The media in Purolator Synthetic Oil Filters is wire-backed. That means there's a wire-mesh that provides extra support to the media so that it remains intact and durable. It's also 100% synthetic so it's designed to work best with synthetic oils. The media in Purolator Synthetic Oil Filters is also 99%* efficient which means it removes 99% of all the dirt and junk that gets into your oil. 99%! AND, it's designed to trap and hold up to 27 grams* of that dirt and junk that could get into your engine and cause major repairs. So what does all this mean? Purolator Synthetic Oil Filters are a long-lasting filter, providing engine protection for 10,000 miles." Personally I didn't buy into it. I'm glad I didn't since it seems like it would just be money wasted. The PureOne has worked well as is and its still 99% efficient as well and to be honest no one sells them around me or at least I would have to put in effort to find one the advance auto by my house doesn't carry them. |

Sorry, when you posted this: · The first is the factory fill removed at 5,800 · The second is Mobil 1 at the recommended 10k · Third is Pennzoil Ultra at 12,300 · Fourth at 14,101 with Mobil 1 again · Finally the fifth is with Amsoil at 16,065 I thought it was ODO miles. So now that I understand, your data supports the fact that running syn oil for over 10k miles is less wear & tear than the first 5k. So you only changed the filter when you changed oil? I was thinking that an excellent test would be to change the filter every 5k, and pull a sample to send to blackstone, but not change the oil unitl the results started to show the oil getting nasty |

Slowly ramping up to 8k, next interval will most likely be close to 10k on Sustina. Will see where it tops out at for this car (BRZ). -alex |

I see what you did thereI agree with the test of removing the filter and just checking the oil. Although I would run the filter longer then than 5k they can last much longer. A guy I went to high school with is an over the road trucker he said they have the oil analyzed before changing it out there intervals are insane of course its a diesel semi... All that said unfortunately I will not make my smart the test dummy for such a process... at least until she gets up there in age or miles which hell this rate like 20k+ a year it wont take long ![]() Are we limited to quoting ability time wise or something on here? I couldnt seem to qoute anyone for a few minutes. Tried different browsers as well strange...
