I thought the tires on these cars were cheap?

So I have less than 1,000 miles on my 2013 FR-S. The other day I went to pull my car out of the garage and noticed the driver's side rear tire was almost flat. Upon inspection, there's a nice big screw stuck in the tire about a 1/2 inch from the sidewall so I know it can't be repaired. I called my dealer about a replacement tire and was quoted $269 before taxes! Is this correct? I looked at Tire Rack and saw the tires were $190 on there but that's before shipping and then getting the tire installed and balanced.

My 2008 Shelby GT500 tires were Goodyear F1 tires and they were around $250 a piece! One of the reasons I bought this car was the thought that replacing tires wouldn't be so bad on this vehicle (yes, looking on Tire Rack I saw other brands that were definitely cheaper I was just was surprised that the stock tires were so $$).

They're high-mileage tires. :-)

I have a three used in storage (~5k in miles) if you want to buy them ultra cheap. Or even just one. PM me a price and I'll send you some tread shots if you're interested. I replaced all four with Michelin PSS after I got a nail too close to the sidewall too.

I'm convinced that the tire company gives the car manufacturer a great deal on a ton of OEM tires. Then they turn around and sell replacements of that tire are an inflated price. So if you were to get a replacement, they profit. If someone needs new tires and wants the OEM tires because they don't know any better, they profit.

I mean, the retail cost on Primacy HP's is more than PSS's...

You should just replace all 4 with a nice all season or summer tire.

I just sold 2 of my tires to fellow frs owner... same problem you had nail to the tire. I would sell 1 to you for $80 with 1000 break-in period miles.

Yup. TireRack had a great deal on PSS when I was replacing mine. Came out to $15-20 less per tire than the Primacy. Granted the PSS will likely wear much much faster, from what I understand.

Not sure how much faster. PSS has a 6 year/30,000 mile treadwear warranty, the best and possibly only max performance tire with a warranty.

I've had my car for a year and I've almost worn through the Primacys in 16k miles. I attribute the relatively quick wear to me getting the ass end out all the time.
I'm hoping the stickier pilot super sports don't break traction and wear so quick.

They certainly stick a lot more. I was pretty ginger on the Primacys though, so mine wore pretty well. I'm a lot more aggressive and have tracked the PSS and love them. Maybe the wearing out quicker will just have to do with how I drive them

I never buy the same tire that comes on the car. They are usually ridiculous over priced and wear horribly. Than again all the cars I've bought were fitted with Michelins. That probably explains my dislike for them, but that a different story. Like above either find a used replacement or hop on tirerack.

The stock tires might not be the cheapest tires in the world (thinking of getting PSS myself), but compared to other cars on the road (looking at you, Mustang and Corvette), they are cheaper. At least there are other alternatives.
