AIRAID intake, Its all good.

Oh this is the best hater thread to start i know some will have mixed feelings about this but i dont care, i am posting my findings.
So a generous individual in Langley was kind enough to give me a Airaid intake as i purchased alot of his used parts tires etc..
So for the sake of consistancy i did this BACK TO BACK .
My OEM setup was a KN dropin, AVO intake tube, and modded snorkel.
Outside temps were 15degrees Celsius .
OEM intake DELTA was about 7-8 degrees cruising, and when let idle for a while after a good pull 20-22 degrees, so 22-23 cruising, and 35-40 on idle

Airaid WITHOUT the box, just the filter hanging there with no sheilding to protect it from the heat, heat soak must be absolutly dramatic right ?? nope, cruising temps were 1-2 degrees higher than stock, if doing pulls on a roll add 2-3 degrees but i was VERY supprised, at a stop after a hard pull up a hill, temps hit 55 so 40 over stock, but while the stock would take about 1km to recover back to crusing temps , the open intake with no box recovered as soon as i got into 3ed gear, very impressed.

Airaid WITH Box, so i have a PERRIN oilcooler, so the box did not fit, thats why i tested it without first , i cut a slot in the box and the hoses are .5 in from the filter , thats how much i had to cut off, to my suprise temps were the same cruising and took longer to heat soak at a stop, similar to OEM but also took longer to recover similar to stock ..... by the way i cut the hole for the hoses and put some DEI heat sheild so the oil cooler hoses didnt radiate heat into the box, and also sealed the box so it sucked air from the snorkel.

MAF SCALING this is where i would see the power loss or power gain.
So as i posted in a past review my AVO drop in caused me to have a very sketchy maf voltage signal, v^v^v^v^v^v^v^ is what i looked like. so i switched back to the KN and it was more like ---v^v----------V^v^v^---. so signal was smoother with the KN.
The signal from the Airaid is perfectly smooth, sometimes a bit of v^v^ but very little, only around 6000 and only in 3ed 4th gear pulls , 1st and 2ed are perfectly smooth lines with very little sketchyness,
AFRs did go a bit leaner, from 12.86 to 13.06 and 12.5 to 12.85.

There you have it haters . my findings. i guess Airaid aint that bad. and i guess having the intake in the engine bay directly infront of the snorkel isnt as bad as some would think. Ideally would be to have a CAI like the perrin, it would not heat soak from a stop and it would get the freshest air during cruising. Goes to show no matter what plastic box you have in the hood, it heatsoaks and takes time to recover, allthough it does help keep IATs from reaching extremes during a stop and slightly better cruising temps, the fact a open filter recovers faster to cooler temps is also interesting. By far a CAI is best, and i will buy one, but i got this for free and i know how much ppl LOVE to bash this intake thought id put it out there. one thing to note, is when you install the MAF , there is a Oring on it, if you look in the hole that Airaid made to accept it , mine had a manufacturing bur, like a seam, i sanded it down so the oring would seal properly, also the sensor in my case did not bottom out the bolts, it stays kind of risen and doesnt sit on the body like it does oem, so be careful to equally tighten each side so the maf is strait in the housing, or else you could get a sketchy reading.

did i feel a power increase, no, but when i did dropin, catless frontpipe, and rear section after a 1000miles i didnt feel anything either, not until i put the unichip, when when i went header + ecutek it was a huge difference.

so turns out i went back to stock, airaid did weird stuff on idle. good intake but i think the velocity stack shouldnt be hollowm it kinda hides the IAT sensor too.. weird design, got it free , tried it , prob try and fit it on another vehicle lol .
