DIY - OFT Mounting Solution
Hi all,
Wanted to share with you a quick DIY I put together to mount my Open Flash Tablet. Setting off, I had a few criteria that it had to meet: 1) Must be easy to detach 2) Must be out of the way / not brush against it while driving 3) Must include a splitter so that I can use my OBDLink-MX w/ Torque when needed *Sorry for the cellphone shots, I'll take a video sometime this weekend to better showcase the install but it's fairly straight forward* So this is what I came up with: ![]() Items you'll need to setup your very own: 1) [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EEDOWU8/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative =9325&creativeASIN=B00EEDOWU8&linkCode=as2&tag=jal ipeprwo-20"]OBD splitter[/ame] 2) [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00347A8GM/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative =9325&creativeASIN=B00347A8GM&linkCode=as2&tag=jal ipeprwo-20"]Scotch Heavy-Duty fasteners[/ame] 3) [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008IOQ3K6/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative =9325&creativeASIN=B008IOQ3K6&linkCode=as2&tag=jal ipeprwo-20"]iMagnet device mount[/ame] 4) [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F5K82A/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative =9325&creativeASIN=B000F5K82A&linkCode=as2&tag=jal ipeprwo-20"]Velcro ties[/ame] Installation: 1) Install OBD splitter - just plug it in, most will have split wires facing toward passenger but should be flexible enough for you to turn them 180 and go the other way. 2) Apply Scotch fastener to flat strip of plastic directly underneath steering wheel (there's a flat spot that's parallel to the ground - try to push it back from the edge a bit, making the fastener flush with the edge will show when looking from afar, not very sightly). ![]() 3) Apply Scotch fastener to male OBD ports (there's more surface area on the male ports but it's up to you if you want to put them on female ports instead) 4) Apply velcro tie to driver side vent to hold OFT port in place ![]() 5) Apply velcro tie to OFT OBD cable and another cluster of wiring underneath the dash (there's a cluster very close to the dead pedal that you can hide, feel around for it) and make sure it's nice and taught 6) Fasten iMagnet suction to triangular slot of front driver side window 7) Fasten rectangular iMagnet plate (has sticky tape back) to back of OFT ![]() And that's about it! Some thoughts - went for a drive and performed flawlessly, it's completely out of the way. One thing you'll have to do is unmount the tablet before you open your door so becareful of that! If you forget, should be fine (did it once) and the magnet just let loose and nothing ripped out of place. When I'm not using the OFT, I use the iMagnet for my Nexus 5. The reason I have it in this position is because above the center console I use an [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CP7ZTBQ/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative =9325&creativeASIN=B00CP7ZTBQ&linkCode=as2&tag=jal ipeprwo-20"]exogear tablet mount[/ame] for my note 2 (for Torque). Let me know if you have any questions!

Just curious. Why not just pull off the trim piece there on the pillar and secure the mount there? Then you could just leave it there and plug it up when you need it.
No need to remove it everytime you open the door. Again, just a thought. |

That's a good idea...a few things drew me toward the window - better suction (especially during heat, suction to plastic parts especially the trim which isn't perfectly flush will deteriorate). Also, the OFT always draws power from OBDII so you need to unplug it every time regardless.

Thanks for this post. So you are able to flash and log using the splitter quite happily?
I use Ecutek and found when I queried the ECU that I was getting CPC errors. Obviously no way I was going to flash a car with that happening. Perhaps not all splitters are created equal. Cheers mate. |

@Bigmaxy no issues with logging, seems to be operating at same frequency as well. Although, I didn't run torque at the same time but my bt adaptor was plugged in.

Only problem I see with this is that it blocks out a very useful window during daily driving

You should try it out, the view is not restrictive at all, at least from my viewing perspective
