Fuck those things. Anyone else here have them? I've spent the last two days with that was about the size of an m&m. Just had a lithotripsy to break the thing up, but damn am I still in some pain. It's amazing something that size can cause so much pain. Though that is pretty big for a kidney stone. And lucky for me they run in the family. I'm only 24 and this my fourth or fifth one. Guess I have even more fun times to look forward too

They can be genetic? Thought all you had to do was drink enough water

They can be more likely to happen. And not drinking enough water isn't the only thing can help cause them. It depends on what kind you have. For instance a lot of chocolate or spicy food can help them form for me. And of course I like both

They are most definitely genetic.

I've had one. And I'm determined to never have one again. I work for a large health related company (www.webmd.com) and have read ridiculous amounts on them. It's not just from dehydration/lack of water. All kinds of healthy (and some not so healthy) foods can also contribute to them. dark chocolate, tea, sugary drinks, spinach, instant coffee....all sorts of things!

When I had mine, the nurse in the ER said it was close to coming out and would only be a few hours...well, apparently mine was as stubborn as I am as it took over a MONTH for it to come out. And when it did, it was the most anti-climactic thing ever

but I was glad that it came out.

One of my former coworkers (female) has had both stones and children. She said the pain you get with a kidney stone is on par with that of childbirth. It's most definitely the closest men can get to having a baby...

I've had 3. The first one was scary as hell because I didn't know what was going on. Went to the ER, MRI, shot of morphine, short 5m visit from a doc and $4500 later I was out the door.

Second one, went to small city hospital in OK (was on the road for work), exact same procedure, $800 (Yay totally crazy health care system).

Third one I read about taking hot bath to loosen up the ureter to help with passing (from a Navy Seal's blog which I can no longer find). Basically you fill the tub with as hot of water as you can stand and keep it hot. Soak for 30m, then go for a short walk around the house and get back in. If the pain keeps increasing then head to the ER. I passed my 3rd stone in the tub. $0.

I had a friend that drank massive amounts of milk and he ended up getting one. Went to the ER and ended up passing out from the pain. I hope to god it never happens to me, infact im getting a glass of water now.

I've never had one as of yet and I hope that I never do. I know people that have had kidney stones and it makes tough men cringe over in pain. No thanks!

The most common types of stones contain high amounts of calcium. Mine was a calcium oxalate. My urologist wanted me to give him the stone once I peed it out so they could determine the type.

I've heard that drinking a lot of Gatorade and similar beverages can increase your chances of getting kidney stones. Never had one, but I can only imagine how bad they suck.

Water is one of the best ways to counteract stones. And of course, good beer

Before I had mine, I would drink maybe 20 ounces of water a day...now I drink upwards of 100 ounces.
