Servicing at dealership - do they use 0W20?
Getting my 86 serviced shortly for it's first oil change. Does anyone know whether the Toyota dealerships use 0W20 oil as per manufacturer's specification, or do they use whatever oil that comes down the overhead hoses?
I rang the local dealership to ask, and was told that they use full synthetic. When I questioned further about the oil specification, they just said "...we use fully synthetic oil as per manufacturer's specification". WTF? Anyway I also rang up the parts department...and they do sell the 4L Toyota Fully Synthetic 0W20 oil....but for $120. Given that the capped price service is $170, I just don't think they will actually use that particular oil since it would eat too much into their profits. I'd change the oil by myself, but I figured that if the dealership does use 0W20 then I wouldn't mind them doing it instead. Opinions? |

Manual states 0W20 and I'm not sure it comes in anything other than full synthetic. Castrol Edge would be the one most dealers would use which is fine. My dealer uses this stuff, I know it was 0W20 cos I had to drain 1.25L of overfill recently & it pissed out like the stuff normally does. The dealers get 200L drums of it & at quite favourable prices so it wouldn't be anything like $30/L but more like $5-10 ! Essentially the dealer can use what ever they want but it must go by factory recommendations.

Thanks. I've never seen the smaller retail bottles in any auto stores though...so probably this grade is only available in bulk size?

Not sure atm but it would appear that 0W20 is virtually non existent unless you ask or special order it at major auto stores. Some specialist stores will have Motul etc. I got this 20L drum from Supercheap special order @ good price.
