TW 200 in STX for 2015?

A friend of mine mentioned that SCCA is changing the TW to 200 in STX for 2015; can anyone substantiate this? I've searched this forum but couldn't find any info to back this up.

Yep, this is true. Technically, all Street and Street Touring classes will be 200 TW in 2015; not just STX. I'm sure you knew that already, but just wanted to clarify for anyone else that might get confused.

Thanks. That's what I figured but just wanted the clarification.

What was the point of this rule change? Did the SCCA really not realize that manufacturers would just change the number stamped on the tire and nothing else?

It had alot to do with Street Stock.. The ST classes just got the bone because of it. They are trying to appeal to Stock(ish) cars for new members and getting rid of R'comps was one way to do it.. Rcomps are about 1000 dollars and up.. depending on size. Usually a person goes thru about 3 sets during the course of the year.. so it became quite expensive to run, even in Stock classes.. The SCCA wanted to appeal to those people that not alot of prep has to go into the car. Hence why they are back on Street tires. more *stockish* so to speak and less money over the long run to be competitive. And now you don't have carry other tires to events.. just drive on your Streets. and run.

As far as the TW thing.. yes they are aware they probably will just change the number. Besides that, there is really no "wear standard".. its a fabricated number in the first place. Hankook RS3's went from 140 to 200 on the same compound. the Dunlaps are 200 as well as the BFG's. Toyo, Federal, Yoko are the only ones that still have 140tw on the sidewalls, But I expect those to change as well.

Excuse my ignorance but is the only way they differentiate R-comps in the rules by TW rating? the ST classes may lose some options initially, but it seems like manufacturers are just conforming to the new rules by waving their magic wands and going poof, this 140 TW is now 200 TW. I may be off on this.

R-comps are TW 80 or so.. depending on the brand. and your kinda right.. its cheaper to stamp 200tw on the side by changing the tooling than to re-design a completely new tire. The Industry standard for TW is fabricated way to generally see how soft tires are. The Insurance institute wanted the tire manufacturers to put how soft or hard the tire is since Way back When Firestone had the HUGE recall on Ford Exploders..
