Angry Kartboy short shifter problems...

I hate this short shifter with a burning passion. I have had this installed for a week now. It rattles in the high rpms and you can move the shifter side to side like it's in neutral when you have it in gear. It also takes more effort to shift between gears. I haven't installed the bushing or mtec spring yet but so far I HATE it.

Yeah, my Kartboy short shifter moves side to side as well. That's probably my biggest pet peeve.

Is it possible that I may have installed it wrong?

Is it harder to shift into gears compared to the stock shifter? As in it takes more force to move the shifter.

You shortened the throw...force required to move the stick increased as a result. This is physics, not a defect.

i remember a little slop side to side, but that never bothered me

it shouldn't be " a lot harder" to get in than stock though

I'd give it another week or 2 for muscle memory to kick in a bit better

also you may want to make sure it's not in backwards...not jumping to conclusions or being mean, but I do recall someone posting that they put it in backwards (honest mistake)

I never thought about the physics lol. It does make sense that with a longer throw you would be moving more force as the stick travels. I will install the mtec spring and bushing and give it a month. The short shifter is throwing off the whole shifting process for me.

that's normal, just give yourself some time to adjust to it before you hate it completely. Just like changing clutches there is a learning curve. It's different but in some time it will feel right again.

I have the KB short shifter, kb rear shifter bushing, and kb transmission mount bushing and mtec springs. This setup basically screams for a heavy weight knob, but it is VERY nice and the transmission just "clicks" into gear as it snaps into the gate. LOVE it!

Maybe a longer shifting rod would help, as long as the part of the shifter which is below the ball is like the kb shifter. But really, I have no issues.

I've been running the short shifter since late November, and the other parts I installed less than a week ago.
@tom@kartboy makes a darn good product. Loved his SS and bushings on my STI, too.

The side to side in gear is there in mine but its also there with the stock shifter, maybe not quite as much. You could make sure you didn't forget to install that washer.

The MTEC springs will get rid of the side to side movement, but they will also increase the effort to shift even more.

The bushing will make it notchier but I've heard it loosens up after awhile and gets better.

The rattling at high rpms I still have, but they have either lessoned or I've gotten used to them.

The increased effort to shift isn't bad, I got used to it in a couple days.
