Planning a Road Trip down to New Orleans- Suggestions?

Hey all,

I'm planning a road trip around mid-march down to New Orleans. I'll be driving from the Pittsburgh area, so I'll most likely take two days to drive down, 3-4 days to explore New Orleans, and another two days to drive back.

Anyways, anybody have any suggestions for places to visit, eat or explore? I've never been to the area so if anyone has any recommendations I would be open to anything.

Thanks in advance,

Cheers

There is both a karting track and a great road course called NOLA Motorsports Park. I know that would be at the top of my list for a trip to NOLA.

Check out Bourbon street, Jackson Square, and the French Market. Sit and watch the break dancer's (Dragon Master Showcase) at the gray stairs straight across from Jackson Square, and absolutely check out Cafe Du Monde and have some of their outstanding beignets (french doughnut). The Audubon zoo and Aquarium of the Americas is worth checking out. River boat ride is pretty sweet too.

On the corner of Bourbon St. and Saint Phillips you'll find our country's oldest bar, John Lafitte's blacksmith shop. Go check out Pat O'Briens and have their world famous Hurricane and chill in their dueling piano bar . Stop by Tropical Isle and get a Hand Grenade (frozen or on the rocks). Spirits on Bourbon has an amazing drink called The Resurrection (frozen or on the rocks) I suggest rocks.

As far as food goes. If you like steak, La Boca is amazing! Jackson Brewery has pretty good food as well. Hard to go wrong with any place serving Louisiana cuisine. Just be sure you have you GPS. Keep your phone charged as best you can and Google map the places I mentioned while on foot. Walking is the best way to travel if you are in the areas I've mentioned. Trying to get a parking spot will be a nightmare or expensive. Definitely use the valet service at the hotel you're staying in offers it. The trolley cars are very convenient too (cash only) @iff2mastamatt MOST IMPORTANT, at night stay in crowed areas. No dark allies.

Thanks all for the suggestions, I had a great trip!

I ended up staying at a state campground in Westwego, and commuted to the city every day. Ate a few joints, enjoyed the St. Patrick's day parade, and went to the WWII museum. I think one of the parks had a jazz concert the Wednesday afternoon I went... definitely a unique experience listening to dub step jazz. The weather was great (60s-70s all week) but I didn't bring sunblock... definitely didn't appreciate the sunburn. Surprisingly, I saw a few other NJ plates in the area (not FR-S/BRZs' obviously)... didn't know there were others just as crazy as I to drive that distance. Everyone's obsession with the Fleur-de-lis intrigued me... I couldn't tell if they were marketing spots for the saints or a symbol for French pride.

I probably won't ever make a road trip down there again but it was a great city to visit, can't wait to visit some other time in the future.

I would have taken two weeks and spent time in Nashville and Muscle Shoals along the way, but I always try to schedule trips around music if I can.
