Subaru is allegedly plotting a special edition BRZ but don't get your hopes up too high as it won't feature turbocharging.

Our colleagues from Car & Driver have obtained information about an upcoming Subaru BRZ special edition that will be revealed later this year. While many are waiting for Subaru to finally turbocharge the BRZ, it seems the special edition will come only with cosmetic changes such as a front lip spoiler, STI badging and bespoke alloy wheels. The kit will also include a rear wing and different side skirts to complete the exterior look.

Don't expect to find the handling tweaks implemented in the Japan-exclusive BRZ tS which also comes with a few upgrades in the braking and suspension departments. For those who can't wait anymore for a factory turbo for the BRZ, there are many aftermarket specialist willing to apply forced induction on the 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter boxer engine of the BRZ which in naturally aspirated form delivers 200 HP (147 kW).

Subaru has plans to bring a new special edition model of the BRZ to market, a car which will be revealed in the next few months.

Car & Driver reports that Subaru is preparing a host of aesthetic changes for the small sports car, likely including a front lip spoiler, side skirts and possibly even a rear wing. The package will not touch the powertrain, keeping the Subaru’s current 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine intact.

In Japan, Subaru sells the BRZ tS (seen above), which not only ups the ante on looks, it also adds to the car’s performance with STI-tuned suspension and brakes. In North America, the special edition BRZ won’t get any real track day enhancements, but our car still may end up with STI badges. Odd, we know.

Subaru to Debut Special BRZ Model Soon, Or: No, There’s Still Not a Factory Turbo (So Stop Asking)

Like this regular BRZ, but special-er.

We’ve learned that Subaru plans to amp up its BRZ sports coupe by selling a special model likely to be introduced within the next couple of months. Unfortunately for Scooby enthusiasts—who have watched outfits like Crawford Performance whip up 500-hp force-induction versions of the car—the model we’re hearing about won’t get any powertrain upgrades. So, yes, that rules out a factory turbo. Again.

And the new BRZ model won’t follow in the footsteps of the Japan-only BRZ tS either, which focused on upgrading handling through a whole passel of STI-branded brake and suspension pieces. Instead, our car will primarily get aesthetic addenda similar to the tS’s, perhaps including a front lip spoiler, special wheels, and STI badging. We were told to expect special side skirts and a rear wing as part of the package.

That’s not to say that we’re definitely getting an STI-themed BRZ, but we also understand that Subaru Technica International—which is a completely separate company from the automaker within the Fuji Heavy Industries portfolio—is eager to officially hawk its wares to U.S. customers. So a run of STI-badged BRZ coupes makes sense. Not as much sense as an actual BRZ STI, of course, but we suppose baby steps are better than no steps.

This is a really annoying sales strategy seen from several Asian manufacturers when it comes to "performance" upgrades and models: NA gets dumbed-down, ricer cosmetic crap while the good stuff stays JDM and/or Euro only. They must have a very low opinion of their NA customers - "Let's throw the monkeys a few shiny baubles, that will keep them happy!"

We're still waiting on that STI-badged BRZ. Will it ever happen? It appears that Subaru is going to disappoint us once again. But this time bland design won't be the reason. Ever since the BRZ first launched, enthusiasts have been eagerly waiting for a factory-spec turbocharged variant to arrive. Sure, you can easily get an aftermarket turbo unit, but BRZ STI still sounds awfully cool. So instead of doing just that, Subaru is reportedly planning to unveil a special edition BRZ in the very near future with just a few aesthetic updates.

Instead of more power, Subaru will be offering exterior modifications like a new front lip spoiler, unique wheels, and (get this) STI badging. At most, there may even be special side skirts and a new rear wing. That’s it. No more power. No handling improvements along the lines of the Japan-only BRZ tS. A special edition BRZ is fine and all, but a real BRZ STI with some extra ponies and improved handling is what’s really desired. Subaru, we’re still waiting.
