Question Backup cam on OEM HU without a harness

Has anyone done it cleanly with radio shack stuff or w\e? I'm debating between spending ~$30 on a harness or doing it myself via soldering and/or using whatever I can find at radio shack to connect wires to the factory plug. Is it possible to open\take apart the stock harness to solder wires to the factory pins on the plug? Anyone?

The vehicle never came with that option so there is no wire harness to solder into.

Yes, but isn't there an existing plug in the same harness where the camera would go (if equipped) just without the wires for camera input\power? I thought thats what the svx.dc harness replaces, while adding the wires for camera input. I just need to know if the factory plug can be dismantled so I can solder an RCA input lead. Have you done this install yet or are you guessing?

The SVXdc harness consists of a 16-pic connector which attaches to the back of the head unit (replacing the factory 16-pin connector). The other end contains an RCA composite video IN (female), a head unit power wire (red wire with yellow stripe, labelled "+6V to cam", and a fork terminal wire which is meant to be attached to ground). You will need to strip about 1/4" of the end of the head unit power cable using the wire stripper to expose the metal core.

Yes you can go find a connector pin from a harness and Pin your own wires into the connector.. That is what I am going to do. I am going to buy the camera with the wire harness then use a factory wire repair kit that has the wires with the pin in them and install the pin and solder in the wires to the camera wiring.

Therefore I don't need to by the SVDX harness.. I am going to use the pin out information from a 2012 forester with the same head unit. Keep in mind There are NO wires sticking out of the connector so you basically have to install the wires.

I ended up buying the harness. I figured after buying the materials (soldering iron, RCA male plug, wire, and whatever else) and the time spent to complete this, my savings is minimal. Plus, I wanted the Option harness he sells to get the 12V lead since my cam is 12 volts, and will use the 6v lead as my trigger to a relay.
