"Certified Used" is it worthless?

Browsing cars.com cheap certified used. Saw this and made me shake my head, I thought certified used was supposed to be a like new/OEM car.

In all fairness, that is a PT Cruiser. I think it looks better than a stock one (Except hood).

I'm a service advisor for Porsche and for a vehicle to be certifiable, it needs to be on Porsche certified wheels. Now if this thread was about a certified far worth it, I would say yes.

I think certified used means jack shit. It's as if someone took a look and said "Yep, that's used. I'll certify that."

Unless there is some paperwork that backs up what CU even means I would take it as a marketing tool exclusively.

That PT Cruiser is certified awesome, fwiw.

I mean regardless of how it works its a "free" extra 2 years of factory warranty. Take it for what its worth but I mean its still extra coverage.

I've seen certified Toyotas and Subarus sold that had non-disclosed crash damage and repairs.

Now that the aftermarket has entered the certified business, you can probably find a certified Yugo that will last about as long as the underwriter is in business.

Even Toyota's certified program is suspect since so many of them are former fleet rental vehicles barged to the mainland from Hawaii, Guam and Puerto Rico. As we all know, rental cars are built for us to express one side of our certifiable passive/aggressive tendencies without penalty, let the next owner deal the salt water damage.

I'm getting married there the end of this year. Driving there in general is complete insanity not even taking the pavement (or dirt) into account.

I call it paradise lost.

It was a freaking paradise in the 90's and early 2000's, a dream to visit, live, party, etc.

But it has gotten bad in so many ways, economically, socially, crime wise, workforce wise... It's a damn shame...

I don't get your point. I've seen dealerships put tacky wheels and ugly wings and such on brand new cars.

"Certified" usually means clean title, inspection by service dept, and extended warranty. I'm not seeing how any of this is incompatible with appearance mods....

This. Certified warranty on a used car is definitely not worthless if it saves you thousands on a repair down the road.

I work for BMW and our CPO program is a big deal. The cars have a completely different checklist/ inspection they must pass and if anything doesn't pass, it is either repaired/ replaced, or the car does not certify. So really you know a BMW certified car has had everything made perfect for you prior to purchase, and you have the additional warranty beyond the original 4 year/ 50,000 mile as well.

For a BMW CPO is worth it.
