Front Bumper Fabrication

Hi FT86Club.com,

As I do not have a lot of experience with body shops or shops that handle custom fabrication of auto parts, I thought I would reach out to the more knowledgeable..

From my understanding the "mustache" on the BRZ front bumper is incorporated into the bumper (can only be removed via a dremmel or similar tool). That being said is it possible/feasible to have a shop create a custom bumper that has a vent in it (see pictures)?

I have seen people dremmel into their front bumpers to create vents for better air flow for intakes.. but I would prefer not to go that route. Just curious if something like this is even within the realm of possibility (I know.. with enough money almost anything can be done)

Thanks all

90% of your average bodyshops won't touch this.

1. You can cut out the bumper's mustache however you will have the crash beam/bar directly behind it. You can remove this but, your car will be toast should it ever get hit.

2. The bumper is a polyurethane which is a bitch to modify. You would have a better bet trying to find someone to copy the stock bumper into fiberglass/carbon fiber which is easy to mod, repair and add onto. The only draw back being it will weight more and slightest curb bump will crack it.

With money everything is possible. You know that so barring you find 2-5k laying around for a custom bumper to be designed via cad, prototyped with various materials, a final prototype created for testing fit, etc and a final version you have a couple of options.

1) contact companies that make body kits that have the above resources to see what it might cost for a one off

2) hit salvage yards, find brz bumpers to experiment on so you don't hack up your car.

Try taking a stock bumper and fab your own product. Would think working in fiberglass to create your "vent" to start with would be cost effective on a small scale. Once refined move on to lighter weight material, cf, different abs plastics, etc. Integrate your creation into a stock bumper, trial and error maybe you come up with something that works for you.

Good luck

This thread has at least 2 people that just cut the mustache out and painted the bumper beam. If you think it looks good, I say find a spare and go to town. Good luck, hope this helps.
