IIHS names twins a top 2013 safety pick

I've heard some snide comments, generally from the area of folks who don't know jack squat about these cars other than they hate them, that our little cars won't hold up in a crash.

Bull.

Sure in a major crash with a larger vehicle, we'll be squashed, but so would most other cars.

Despite the disparaging remarks from the arrogant ignorant, there's this:

http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/subaru/brz

So, not only are our cars fun, but we know that we're reasonably safe in them too.

One of the most genuinely informative bits I've ever seen on Top Gear is from series 2 episode 7. IIRC, they had actual examples of frontally crashed vehicles that had gotten different crash test ratings. They showed how the best rated class crumpled so much in the front that (almost) none of the crash made it into the cabin, eg, the dash wasn't pushed in, and the front door opened easily because the door frame wasn't deformed at all. The second class showed some dash movement into the cabin towards the passengers and the door could be opened with some effort due to some deformity. The third class showed major encroachment by the dash and the door frame so deformed that it took major effort to open it. (Please bare with my simplified descriptions, it's been years since I saw that episode -- maybe I'll find a torrent and watch it again.)

Now watch the front offset test video in the link posted (which I did before my purchase) and look at the door frame. That gave me complete confidence in the safety of this car.

I'd like to see a small overlap test on these. I think they'd do decently because 1) Other Subarus have done well with this and 2) The frame appears to be designed with it in mind.

I saw my insurance drop nicely even though I lowered my deductibles when I went from STI to BRZ. And safety was a concern, but no longer. Just less winter confidence, but I live in Phoenix... WHAT WINTER? We're supposed to have a low of 31F tonight & I'll bet that's the coldest it'll get here all winter.

Keep in mind this is the small overlap test where forces are a lot more concentrated. I just finished watching quite a few of those videos and lots of other vehicles in the same class as that Kia (like the Honda CRV) had the same results where the driver missed the airbag.

It's also interesting to see which cars are designed more rigidly than the others. The Honda Odyssey didn't have much crumple and you could see the shock wave move down the body.

Those test dummy would probably die instantly if they were to snap their neck or severely injure their neck. Also it was hard to see the FRS crash haha/

Maybe you saw it, but here's the explanation and how the other vehicles in the class faired. The Kia wasn't even the worst.

Don't try to miss the oncoming unless you're sure you can. At the last second and if you can't miss it turn into it and take as much of the oncoming as you can. It will save your life.

This applies to all obstacles as wide as your car. Also, if you're going to hit a tree or pole, don't nearly miss those either, peg it like you meant to.

The total frontal area of your car is a big sheet metal airbag. Use it all if you have the option.
