Dealer Negotiation
Can anyone give me some advice or perhaps a good link for buying a new car. Never bought one from a dealer yet and my girlfriend is buying her first car soon. I need to home some skills as well so I can negotiate a good deal when I can finally get my BRZ. Thanks everybody.

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPor5b7JLLE"]4.1.5 Rob Gruhl - How to Buy a New Car - Ignite Seattle 2007 - YouTube[/ame]
How to buy a car^ Additionally, Depending on where you are employed or a credit union, you can also get "Preferred Pricing" which is a good place to start - Example: https://www.gmsupplierdiscount.com/ip-vpp/ http://www.bankrate.com/auto.aspx - good place to look at finance rates. When I've helped girls purchase vehicles, they sometimes seem to hone-in on things like color, bluetooth, accessories more so than a guy who is all about metrics and horsepower and storage compartments for raw meat and man stuff. I would ask your girlfriend to pick a list of cars, or pick a list of brands first (toyota, ford, chevy, audi, ect.) Then after brands, go through cars in those brands and get a list of 3-5 cars that she wants to test drive. Lastly, this is your girlfriend not a spouse.. don't get her a car because you like it, make sure you're not driving the purchase of something she would regret later.... when she inevitably dumps you for Timmy the poolboy. For your BRZ... buy from Clint @ https://www.facebook.com/ClintAtHeuberger Last edited by Odd; 12-04-2013 at 12:47 AM. |

Lol I used to do pool but my name is not Timmy. Yea she wants a VW Golf a lot (she got the GTI but it's too pricey) She just needs help getting it. Crappy part is she does not have credit built. Her father and mother didn't quite get their citizenship we will say. They really do not have credit either. We are trying to get a 2013 model but as the local VW was just built thy are stocked up on 2014's only. She just wants it in white and the cheapest possible. There are plenty of standard features and she's not too picky. She would like a sunroof but that is an extra $2-3K. I work at an international insurance assistance company so I'll try to find out if we do that. Tho I don't believe we do. I have seen Clint's page. I will get it from him them if you recommend it. Can I ask if there is any particular reason you do?

Only way I think to get past bad credit would be to open up a small loans (1k, 2k) and pay them off over time to build it back up. Could even pay them back with each other.

My "I was young and stupid once too" advice is to tell her to buy something used. Cheaper car, lower payments, since you're likely going to go into this with high interest because of the high/no credit situation, might as well use this purchase as a credit builder. Plenty of used GTIs out there for less than the price of a new Golf. Probably want to get the extended warranty on that though. I love VW, but goddamn if they don't have stupid issues sometimes.
What I do before I go in is research the market within 200 miles or so and decide on a reasonable price I want to pay for the car, and stick to that. If they bring out a four square and try to adjust payments, terms, etc, stick to your bottom line price you want. They can fudge the numbers in every which way to make it look like you're getting a good deal, but suddenly that loan has stretched out to 88 months. Don't be afraid to walk out. I've been in at least two situations where "Oh no, we just can't do that at all, sorry." I write my name and number on the back of the business card they just handed me, hand it back to them and say "Well, here's my number if you change your mind." I stood up, started for the door, and was stopped before I could leave while they go "see what the manager can do." Both times I ended up with exactly what I wanted. Go around to your local banks and credit unions and see what they can do before you even set foot on the dealership lot. If you can get approved for financing through them, you're already one step ahead of the dealership F&I office, as as lot of them try to tack on a percent or more APR. If you know what you can get that puts the ball in their court to battle with the banks that have already approved you, and not you versus the dealership trying to whittle down your APR. Here's some good reading if you get the chance too: http://www.e46fanatics.com/faq/rizzo.html |
