First Speeding Ticket, Oh JOY!

So I got my first speeding ticket today ever...

Been driving since I was 16, am now 23. 7 Years of clean driving...The ticket calls for 70mph in a 45mph, which is a bunch of bull first of all because the speed limit quickly changes from 45 to 55. Granted I was still speeding regardless...oops.

So anyway in NYS thats something like a $400 fine, 6pts on your license and another $300 fine for driving responsibility fee or some other bs.

Anyways I talked to a bunch of people at work and the best route to go is plead not guilty and go to court. They said what will happen is you talk to the DA they offer you a plea bargain still get fined but substantially less something like $150 non moving violation and 0pts on your license. Reason being is that the town will get the money whereas if I pleaded guilty the state would get the money.

Out of curiosity I called an attorney and that would charge a flat rate of $500 (yikes) and guaranteed to lower the points and fee for the fine. This did not sound very appealing to me...

Can anyone give me some either legal advice or advice via past experiences. Right now I think I'll just go to court, if what the peeps at my work are saying is true. I'm guessing stuff like this will vary from state-state.

No, but seriously I would post in your specific region and ask people from your state because every state will handle it differently. Good luck.

Good luck. I got three $400+ speeding tickets in my late teens, but haven't had one at all in the past decade. You'll learn eventually. It's not about always going the speed limit, it's about not weaving, not drawing attention, not driving like a jerk, and be extremely aware of cars around you and parked on the side. I've had red sporty cars for 15 years and speed all the time. I just don't get pulled over anymore because I drive smart. Pay it and learn from it rather than get out of it and keep driving in ways that will get you more tickets.

Crappy way to end the week...BLAH.

I'll post in the "NY" section.

Any further advice will be appreciated.

Plea not guilty and send the ticket in. When you get your court date the cop or the DA will plea bargain with you and 9/10 times give you a parking violation with no points. Especially since this is your first offense.

I got my first and only 3 when I was 17 and 18. 24 now and only got a warning for rolling a stop sign since. It's not worth the insurance rate molestation tickets cause.

The cop didn't even give you a warning for your first offense?

Nope he was a ****.

Hardly said anything to me...just gave me a ticket and I was on my way. I tried to be as polite as possible. Cops do make me a bit nervous.

And I'm going to check on my way home but... he didn't pull me over the zone I was even speeding in. If my memory serves me correctly, initially the speed limit is 45mph then it picks up to 55mph in a very short amount of distance. He claims I was speeding in the 45mph zone, so he must have followed me for a good 2.5 miles and I turned down another main road before he even pulled me over.

Definitely go to court. But just pleading not guilty doesn't mean you're going to get off automatically, first offense or not. A lawyer can get that down for you, and I know 500 bucks seems like a lot now, but ask yourself how much this may increase your insurance premiums for the next several years.

And hold up, back up a second here.. The cop was a **** because he didn't give you a warning? You were speeding. You broke the law. He did his job. Now it's time to deal with the consequences of your actions.

Last ticket I got was in my 4 day old S2000. LOL 86 in a 55.

Good luck. When I first started driving, cops gave out more warnings. Now they give out tickets to make revenue. Just my opinion.

I didn't say he was **** because he didn't give me a warning. Just the way he came off to me wasn't very professional, seemed like someone pissed in his coffee.

Generally when you treat an officer of the law with respect they do the same back, and sometimes that helps to reduce a ticket.
