Toyota Bringing Aqua Air Roadster Concept to Tokyo: Sub 86 car is that you?

Toyota’s Aqua G Sports concept won’t be the only car using the Aqua name at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show. Toyota will unveil two more concepts called Aqua Cross and Aqua Air.

While there’s not much information about the former, the latter came to our attention via a report from Yahoo Japan. The roadster study approaches the hybrid vehicle theme in a more entertaining way and may preview a future convertible hybrid model.

The concept has B-segment proportions, as it is 3,990mm (157 in) long, 1,690mm (66.5 in) wide and 1,440mm (56.7 in) tall, with a wheelbase of 2,550mm (100.4 in).

The Aqua Air study features the same hybrid powertrain of the Aqua G Sports, consisting of a 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle petrol engine, an electric motor and a CVT transmission. Combined output is 100 horsepower, with average fuel economy rated at 35.4 km/liter in Japan (2.82 l/100 km/83.2 mpg US).

Design-wise, the Aqua Air looks sportier and sleeker than the Aqua G Sports, but retains elements like the wide trapezoidal grille and triangular headlights. There are no other details so far, other than the concept will join an extended range of Toyota studies at the show, including the JPN Taxi, Noah and Voxy minivans, the futuristic FV2, the FCV and the FT-86.

The Toyota Aqua Air Concept is a proposal more fun for the compact Japanese hybrid. The concept is a roadster friendly visual measuring 3.99 m long, 1.69 wide and 2.55 1.44 in height between the axes.

With dimensions that can put it in the American market, the Toyota Aqua Air Concept, features the same engine of hatch, one 1.5 Atkinson cycle engine, an electric motor and CVT transmission. With 100 horsepower combined, the model can do 35.4 km / liter (JC08).

157 is a good length, I think a shorter wheelbase is better though, and 56.7 in is way too tall. The SW20 had extremely sexy proportions.

But most importantly, if it's not midengined, I don't care.

I recall Tada-San saying that the sub 86 car maybe built on a existing platform like the Yaris.

Toyota has started work on a baby brother for its 86 cult coupe.

The Japanese car maker has already begun development of a revived Supra to sit above the affordable two door, and is now turning its attention to fulfilling the three-tiered lineup it promised by drawing the framework for a lightweight sub $20k rear driver.

The chief engineer for the 86, Tetsuya Tada, confirmed Toyota has commenced early development work on the baby sportscar, but would not divulge too many details as he is not overseeing the project.

"We have started on the car below the 86," he told Drive while in Australia this week to celebrate the cars first anniversary.

"It is not yet decided if it will be two-seat or two-plus-two; we are developing the concept now."

But he did ensure the car will share the same fun-to-drive DNA as the 86 and won't be compromised by being based on an existing small car platform such as the Yaris or Corolla.

"Rear wheel drive is the best solution for sportscar handling so this will be true for all three Toyota sportscars," Tada added.

Just how small the baby 86 will be is not yet known, but Tada admitted it won't be a Japanese-style Kei car replacement for the Daihatsu Copen but a city-sized coupe designed to thrill even in congested large cities such as London, Tokyo and New York.

Similarly, what powertrain will drive it is also still under wraps. But, as it is doing with the larger Supra-style coupe which is expected to feature a hybrid 3.5-litre V6, Toyota is keen on developing road-going applications of its super capacitor hybrid system it uses in its Le Mans-type sportscar racing program.

It has confirmed it will reveal a Hybrid R concept at next month's Frankfurt motor show that will showcase just how this technology could be adapted into its three-tier sportscars.

Well 2002 mr2 failed miserably, while many mustangs...etc was still in the 300ish. Nowadays they are into 400ish...why would this be welcomed on the market..beside..it looks like a barbie car

Honestly though, the FRS and Miata are doing okay, which shows there's a market for low powered cars. I would love to see a new MR2 in the spirit of the AW11: hardtop, spiced up engine, and usable storage space compared to the ZZW30. If Toyota has the balls to pick up where Honda left off by discontinuing the K20 I'll save up for one. Doesn't even have to be a special engine, just give a ZR engine some forged rods and lightweight valves or something.

Toyota is planning to unveil a handful of sporty concept cars at the upcoming 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, most of them based around its Prius C subcompact. We've already seen the Aqua G Sports (Aqua is the name used for the Prius C in Japan) and now we have a first look at two more concepts, the Aqua Air roadster and Aqua Cross crossover.

Of most interest is the Aqua Air, which is a pint-size convertible equipped with a gasoline-electric hybrid drivetrain. Peak output is said to be approximately 100 horsepower, with drive going to the front wheels via a CVT. Given its small size--the concept stretches just 13 feet in length--fuel economy comes in at an impressive 80+ mpg.

It’s not clear if the Aqua Air is destined for production, though we should know more once the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show gets underway on November 20.
