serious curb check..help

...Hit a curb trying to whip a u turn and slid right into it....
It scratched the rim and front bumper, bent the lower control arm and of course knocked it out of alignment.. Do I claim it on insurance or just eat it? Also when I get it fixed any aftermarket ideas or suggestions?

Claim it, did the same thing to mine. (Ran over a sidewalk ) scrapped bumper, lost a fender liner, broke skid plate, pushed the radiator mount in so my front right wheel sat way closer to the fender, Took it to a cool shop I knew got 5k from insurance after deductible and got everything fixed and got used leftover money on a body kit/installation and tires!

You slid (under steered) into a curb in front of you...which is on the passenger side of the u-turn. Why the heck did you approach the turn that hard? Don't answer.

Just eat it and remember it. If insurance isn't a must, don't them get them involved. And slow down.

Hello balla_08 and .....

(DANG, folks, being a bit hard on the new guy ... aren't you.. ??)

Well, balla_08, it appears you did whack that curb pretty hard. I reckon the paint will "buff down" ... and accept some touch up paint. The rim should sand out and accept some paint ...unless it's bent.

If the lower control arm is bent, I'd suggest you have them take a hard look at the strut and the wheel bearings.

As far as insurance .... I reckon that will depend the extent of the damage (cost of repair) your deductable and how the claim would affect future premiums.

I hope you get er fixed up soon.....

Next time use your ebrake.

I'm kidding.

Like humfrz said, figure out what the cost is first, and then make a decision on whether to pay out of pocket vs. insurance(mainly what will happen to future payments)

Ah, bummer. Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

BTW, thank you for not concocting some nonsense story of a deer at an urban intersection crossing against the light when it wasn't his turn. Most of the stories accompanying these crashes involve some errant animal. Not for a moment do I believe those stories. I appreciate your candor.

The insurance issue is interesting. It has always been my understanding that when one makes a claim for something like this, the insurance company will raise your rates and keep them raised until you've "repaid them with interest and then some." So, I don't know if it's possible to make a claim and avoid paying for it anyway in the end.

Perhaps you might make the claim, fix your car, and immediately cancel the policy when they raise your rates. The thing is, can you then get lower rates elsewhere? These weasels appear to maintain a national database accessible by all insurers. But you still may be able to purchase insurance at a lower cost from a competitor.

P.S. Practice those turns where there's nothing (and no one) to hit.

If going through insurance it'll go through the "collision" clause, which is at-fault accident when you hit things that you shouldn't. It will go up. The accident will follow you even if you change insurer.

What is your age?

What is your driving record?

A forum member "Joetheegyptian" Wrote...

Wrecked my FR-S, now can't afford insurance
Some background info:
-I'm 20 years old
-put all my money as a down payment ($5,000)
-I've had over 15 tickets and 4 wrecks (my fault) in the past 5 years. 3 of those tickets and 2 of the wrecks were in the past 3 years.
-Since I have a bad record, my dad has insurance on the car but I drive.
-I'm a full time student
-I work 55 hours a week making minimum wage.
-I've been leasing the FR-S for 7 months

So a few days ago I rear ended a car and caused 7k worth of damage to my love. Insurance is fixing the car but I will have to get my own insurance. I've gotten quotes at around $800 per month! As a student, I can't afford to pay over $1100 per month to drive this awesome car. Since this car is leased, what options do I have? I can't imagine working all summer to buy a POS Civic and still pay $300 per month for liability. I'd appreciate any kind of advice.

I would fix it by myself. Insurance guys may increase your premium if they conclude that you're a type of reckless driver.

Like others said, bumper can be buffed/repainted. It's lower part anyways.
Replace control arms, check wheel bearing, and realign the car.

Fix it yourself. In the past I had a 1 car accident in the snow and had to pay 3k. Better than making insurance claims and filing police reports. An expensive lesson but I learned it on my own and don't have to worry about lingering side effects.
