Lexus IS-F or GT86

Need some opinions please.

Plan on buying a new GT86 in January. I know the car is underpowered for Gauteng, so I will end up supercharging and also doing suspension, wheels, etc. A new car (high spec) will be around R350k and mods should be around R100k. That puts the final price of a car around R450k (give or take a bit).

Now, just to throw a spanner in the works... and it's a BIG spanner. You can get a used low-mileage Lexus ISF for that sort of price.

I'm aware both cars are worlds apart in terms of how they delivery their power, but the ISF is going to cost a bit more to maintain while the 86 is going to cost a bit to mod. So from a cost perspective, it's going to be much over muchness. Deprecation will be more on the ISF, but I'm not going to get money back on GT86 mods too. However, you end up with similar initial price point, with 2 very different cars...

The reason for leaning towards the GT86 is that there is more "fun" involved in doing it up slowly. Eg. Choosing the right wheels, modding the interior, etc. Whereas, the ISF has everything pretty perfect and should just be left alone.

Give me some opinions - think out aloud. What would you consider or do?

you actually summed it up nicely already... although one extra thing to consider is the driving and handling. I absolutely love the go-kart feel of the 86 and the ease with which you can horse around without killing yourself.

Give you a bolt for your spanner.

Your R100k will end up more around R150k and go higher and higher.

you want a fast sports car dont get a 86.. (Porsche Boxster)

you want to get a car to play with and throw non recoverable money at, get a 86

You can just get a new 86 and enjoy it as is.

There you go, wise words. If I wanted a "fast" car there are many other things I'd consider, Boxster being at the top of that list. Also Z4M, 135i, etc but definitely not a big, heavy "luxury sport sedan".

That's actually not a bad idea. The car makes a pretty decent "run-around" in stock form.

But at the new prices of the 86, Toyota will make people think twice of purchasing a 86.

a new GTi at R360K would be my choice, as I can assure you, the little nice to have you going to add to the 86 will end up costing you more than the GTi.

sad to say, as the 86 is just such a fun car to own.

glad i bought mine early... now ppl can think i drive a pricey, exclusive sports car...
but it's true though, the new price point puts the car in different territory where other considerations come into play (a new BRZ is now priced 389K )

V8 4-door saloon with the world's fastest changing gearbox.
But if you want something more fun, then go for the 86.
You'll not only enjoy the drive, but also customising it.

Cant help to wonder if you are unsure if you want a 86???????

Having one since July 2012 and not being a petrolhead, I have had an amazing time turning my 86 into my personlised style. thats what is great about this car, so much variation to make each persons 86 unique.

you want fast you can make it fast, you want hot you can make it hotter, however it all comes a cost, which will push the price inline with top end hot hatches.
There is no denying each person that has bought a 86, has no regret, its simply stunning to look at in stock form and it turns heads.
in modified state SC or Turbo, the art of surprise when the top hatches cant drop the 86, is simply priceless.
Here is the advise you looking for.

Go sign your OTP, best decision you'll ever make.

Not sure if the waiting lists have dropped, so you could be in for a 3 to 5 month waiting period based on color or spec, so dont waste time.

BUT
if you wanting a hot fast car without spending money, move on this aint the car for you.

I agree with sav on this one. Having jumped into a Lexus IS-F and revved the engine I can say it's helluva responsive and on my A-list of cars I want. But it will probably guzzle fuel in everyday use and I'm sure the upkeep isn't quite in affordable territory.I've had my 86 Std since September 2012 and I'm still learning all it's tricks - it is a car that will teach you so much in stock form and probably try and kill you when modified . There are so many super hot cars you can buy used for 86 std money.

The steering on the 86 is brilliant - and that was the selling point for me. It's a car you can drive on the limit. The fact that there are so many wonderful aftermarket addons to personalise your car means you can comfortably burn R150k+...

That said - what do really you want - speed or fun? 86 is no slouch but can't hold a candle to the GTI 6/7 on the highveld in stock form. If you're happy to play with other 86's or by yourself on the road - 86 makes good sense.

And no you will never be finished modding an 86... Ever...

I'm gonna stick to my original decision and go for a 86. However, will only order in January as I want a 2014 model and not really stuck without a car until then. Gives me time to make up my mind on colour too.

I also like the option of personalising the car. Yep, it does have a cost associated with it, but I guess it's ultimately about the enjoyment above all else.
