Should I check for injector damage?

I've read through all the threads about injector failures and I realize the problem isn't extremely widespread however from what I gather, the stock tune does have some issues that cause knocking in areas that CAN cause damage to the injector seals, and possibly the motor itself.

My car is relatively high-mileage at this point with 23,000 miles already clocked. I can only get crappy Cali 91. It's my daily driver, which involves 30 miles of canyon roads daily and another 50 of mixed city/hwy. So while I don't drive the piss out of it, she has plenty of fun. I've also done 5 or 6 autoxes, but no track time. I have no power mods other than a front-pipe.

So should I be worried enough to check for injector damage? I have a tune on the way that's supposed to fix those knock areas. The car seems to drive just fine. Yeah, I've heard a bit of knock in a few places or during certain shifts, but nothing extreme. I've never had a CEL. My on-board display MPG average since new reads 30.2, which is closer to 29 calculated at the pump, but still...seems good. I've never really had idle issues...yeah a few dips here and there but never too often. Of course my fuel pump chirps when temps are hot...though not as loudly as when the car was newer.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about it. There are a lot of these threads.... My opinion is this: no need to pull them unless you are getting symptoms.

Stop looking for a problem if you don't have a problem: you'll go nuts.

I know, I know. It's just one of those where I "wonder" if there's any damage that I'd benefit from seeing now rather than later. I've owned a number of BMWs and with most models, the community recognizes some key problem areas that if you inspect early, and correct if needed; prevents majorly expensive issues down the road.

With the Vishnu tune I'll have next week I'm pretty confident the quirky aspects of the stock tune will be corrected. But if I've already done any damage already, I'd prefer to know about it.

[kkocks on wood] -- this car has been dead nuts reliable so far. All my issues are trivial and the car returns fantastic mileage while also keeping a smile on my face. I just want to keep it that way.

This is me right now.

You could always check if you got any misfire code or something like that.. I am not sure how, but I know you can do it.

Then I wouldn't be to worried about it. Just keep checking every 2 weeks or so. I don't have such a thing, and I am losing my mind!!!

If your fuel avg. display is reading 30.2 you are in no way driving this car hard enough to be worrying about DI failures.

I'm actually pretty amazed by it. That is a global average that even includes all my AutoX days. Since I drive mostly downhill on the way TO work, I do a lot of coasting with engine braking, which I know generally has injectors turned off or nearly off. My way HOME from work is mostly uphill (obviously), so that's where I have tons of fun. I don't wring it out to redline all day every day, but trust me...I have plenty of fun.

My global average is only 1MPG worse than my last car, a BMW 335d.
