Car insulation
Hey guys,
I think this thread belongs here. Anyway I'm planning on installing some car insulation in the fr-s. My question is where are the main areas that I should focus on when installing the insulation. I'm mainly concerned about minimizing road noise. Thanks |

I've been considering this, too. Step one is definitely removing or disabling the resonator tube, but I have zero relevant experience or knowledge beyond that. I found some decent, basic information on the Dynamat site, though: www.dynamat.com
It looks like the order in which to insulate areas depends on what you're after (road noise dampening vs. audio system performance). The biggest road noise culprit seems to be the doors. Just for a ballpark comparison, check out their installation guide for a 1990-2005 MX5: http://www.dynamat.com/download/vss/...azda_Miata.pdf Again, I know zero about this topic, so this info is just what I was able to find via a basic Google search. |

I used to be a huge fan of Dynamat for it's performance, but hated that it was so heavy. Adding 100+ lbs of sound deadening is painful on the performance. I just couldn't do it on my RX-7. I used Cascade for the RX and loved it. It's half the weight, and works as good, or better, than Dynamat. I did it just around the speakers in the RX, but did the doors and trunk in my Camry (I didn't care if I added weight to the Camry)
I am adding Focal Utopia Be speakers to my FR-S and will be using Cascade again around the speaker only. I'm justifying the extra 10-15 lbs or so by adding a Siebon CF hood to compensate (do no harm) http://cascadeaudio.com/car_noise_co...ntrol_kits.htm http://cascadeaudio.com/car_noise_co...B-2HD_Tech.pdf

Do some research on DIYMA and similar sites. To really make an impact you need a combination of CLD tiles, MLV, decouplers (CCF for example), etc.

Unless you go prepreg carbon you'll be adding weight from sound deadening and most likely from the hood too.. at least the hood will more or less break even. The Aluminum hood is light and cheap CF is not (by comparison to real CF (aka pre preg)).

On my 08 Fit I used hardwood floor acoustic underlay. Cut it to shape and attach it with 3M spray adhesive. It's no dynamat but it's light and cheap and works pretty well. As far as I can tell. I lost the resinator and put the stuff on the inside of the doors and in the spare tire well.
