Invidia N1 sweet smell from exhaust

So I busted my FT86SF V2 catback and replaced it today with an Invidia N1 catback. There are no leaks and it sounds great, but when I started her up for the first time and let her sit, I noticed some colorless smoke from the exhaust and a sweet smell (smells like burning plastic). I took her for a drive, and the smoke was pretty bad. Parked her; let her sit for a few hours, then took her for another drive and I didn't notice any smoke, but the sweet smell was still there (albeit not quite as bad). Neither drive could be considered spirited, but were actually closer to babying her.

My first thoughts when seeing smoke and smelling sweetness, was head gasket or coolant getting into the exhaust, but the smoke wasn't white and the smell was a bit different, so I don't think that's it. Plus, it wasn't doing it with the old, damaged exhaust. I inspected the exhaust closer after the first round of driving and noticed that both tips were slightly touching the rear valence, so I thought maybe it was the valence burning, but I didn't notice any melting and it really does look like the smoke is coming from the exhaust itself and not from above it.

Any ideas on this?

It should also be noted that my car is currently running rich from the aftermarket intake, but it doesn't smell like fuel and if it was running that rich, I would be seeing black smoke, not colorless.

Well, just got word back from Jeremy from FT86SF (who I bought the exhaust off of). Turns out that the smell and smoke is completely normal for Invidia exhausts. Just the manufacturing oil burning off... Phew! That's a relief!

Yup, nothing to worry about.
My headers smoked for a while too when I installed them, its just manufacturing oils burning off

Enjoying the sound? Do you have a UEL header by chance?

LOVE the sound... drone is a bit annoying, but nothing I can't handle.

I don't have an UEL, no, but an EL is the next purchase. I have the Invida N1, and an Invida catted front pipe. I also have a motive over pipe, but decided to wait to get my header before installing it since I have to drop the header to do it anyway.

Hey sorry to dig up an old thread and go off-topic, why did you switch to the N1 (and not replace the V2)? How do the two compare in terms of sound and weight?

Mainly because I was low on cash and didn't have a spare car, so I needed a replacement asap. I still have the V2 and plan to send it back to get repaired. I might put it back on and sell the N1, but still haven't decided yet. I absolutely LOVE the sound of the V2. It's much louder, but doesn't have the 3-4k rpm drone that the N1 has and has a better tone to it. The only thing really holding me back is the dual exit look of the N1. If I don't put it back on, I'll probably keep the V2 until there is either a way to fill the extra hole or someone releases a rear bumper that only has one exit (in the factory location, of course). Hard to tell at this point. haha.

It should also be mentioned that I have a invidia catted front pipe as well, so ymmv.

An ARK test pipe with helmholtz resonator completely got rid of the drone for me FWIW. The test pipe really made the biggest change in how much I liked the exhaust.

Awesome, thanks for the comparison. I'm planning to get the V2 eventually, good to know that it wasn't because the V2 sucked or anything like that.

FT86SpeedFactory has hole covers now for single exit exhausts now, not sure if you saw them already:
