Ehxaust in the winter
I am debating whether to install my exhaust before or after it snows. I live in chicago so it snows quite alot.
For those who have an exhaust and drove it during the winter, how did you keep it clean from the road salt? And if anyone knows a smart way to keep the exhaust clean please share. I am aware of getting a car wash often but i wonder if there are other options.

My T1R 70R just survived a terrible shitty salty Canadian winter .. didn't really need to do anything other than touch up with stainless steel wool / stainless polish

my perrin lasted a horribly salty Utah winter last year with no issues. just wash it weekly and you'll be good. I was more concerned w/ the paint and underbelly than the exhaust

Don't use Bar-keeper's friend on your Stainless Steel Exhaust!
I don't want to go in-depth explaining the chemistry and stuff, but it will damage the stainless-properties I've had my exhaust on through 5+ years of snow and had no issues with rust or ugliness and I'm in the Midwest Nick C.

water + salt + oxygen = rust on steel (more or less)
That's also true on the suspension parts, and frame, et cetera. So the best thing to do is keep the car clean and dry. Wash the salt off frequently. Stainless Steel works by forming a layer of Chromium Oxide on the surface, but only if it is clean and dry. Otherwise it will make regular Iron Oxide, better known as rust. (Bonus point: aluminum forms a protective layer of aluminum oxide.) Bar-Keeper's Friend is a polish, which works by being abrasive. Used on Stainless steel it removes the protective chromium oxide. If you do that when it is less than clean and dry, then you'll get a nice even coat of rust on your stainless. It takes a few hours for a new protective layer of chromium oxide to form. (bonus point: Go read the ingredients list on your toothpaste, find where it says "silica". That's sand.)

I had a car that I use VHT header paint on it and it lasted a good 3 winters before rust started sneaking from the inside out. I guess I blame myself for not washing the car as often as I should for depending on the paint too much. Otherwise it probably wouldve lasted longer
