2010 Geneva: Pagani Previews New 678-Horsepower Zonda Tricolore

Quote:
As much as we're looking forward to the release of the new Pagani C9 - a vehicle both slated to replace the current Zonda and potentially be sold in the U.S. for the first time - the imminent departure of the Zonda is a little bittersweet. Lucky for us, Pagani is sending the model off with a special one-off version known as the Zonda Tricolore.

The Tricolore is crafted in honor of Italy's equivalent of the Blue Angels, which is known as the Frecce Tricolori. Although a normal Zonda looks enough like a jet fighter, the Tricolore adopts a color scheme used by the aeronauts -- the carbon fiber bodywork is tinted blue, while two pairs of red, white, and green stripes run from the tip of the hood to the base of the windshield. Pagani also fitted the car with bespoke LED running lights, recolored the Cinque's pinstripe from orange to blue, and painted the brake calipers a matching hue of azzuro.

Of course, the Zonda Tricolore has the fighter jet performance to back its matching aesthetic. The Tricolore -- like all Cinques -- uses a body and tub crafted from a special weave of carbon fiber and titanium. Power comes from a 7.3-liter V-12 sourced from Mercedes-Benz, which is tuned to produce 678 hp. Mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox, the Tricolore is capable of rocketing from 0 to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds, and pulling 1.45 gs of lateral acceleration.

Pagani is only creating one of these unique Zondas, and as such, it will be the most expensive of any ever sold, a staggering €1.3 million or roughly $1.8 million. The Tricolore will be officially unveiled at the Geneva motor show before being delivered to its owner.

One-Off Pagani Zonda Tricolore Announced for Geneva Debut

Quote:
Pagani has released pictures of the Zonda Tricolore, a car based on the Zonda Cinque but with some marked differences. Only one Tricolore will be built and presumably it will be the same unit unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. Its purpose is to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Italian equivalent of the British Red Arrows Display team which is known as the ‘Frecce Tricolori'.

Its tub is also made from carbon fibre weaved with titanium wire while the exterior is just carbon fibre. The front end features special LED lights that look like the tail fin of an airplane. Instead of the Cinque's air intake snorkel, the Tricolore has a small vertical fin on top of the engine cover whose nature and purpose will be fully revealed at Geneva. The transmission is an automated paddle-shift type.

A clear blue lacquer (polish) coating and Frecce Tricori-mimicking strips running on the sides of the car complete the impressive body look.
This once-off Zonda Tricolore will be priced at an eye-watering €1.3 million (US$1.76 million).

Geneva 2010: Pagani Zonda Tricolore stands out in the crowd

Pagani Zonda Tricolore – Click above for high-res image gallery

Quote:
Any other time we would tell you that navy blue paint, yellow wheels and a bright blue interior would be a recipe for disaster, but this is no ordinary car. Of course, Horacio Pagani could probably paint his cars any color combination he wanted and we'd still think it was awesome. The level of detail in each Zonda is extraordinary, and we never miss a chance to look one over in depth when we get the opportunity. Lucky for us, then, we stumbled on this Zonda at the Geneva Motor Show.

The particular Zonda you see is the Tricolore, a special edition made to celebrate a squadron of the Italian air force named the Frecce Tricolori. The squadron is a demonstration team composed of nine planes and is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The Tricolore is painted to match the squadron's planes, and the result is a stunningly beautiful Zonda.

You can't drive it on the road, you can't drive it on 95% if race tracks because it's to load, so it would scare away any human being (let alone girl) within 30 miles of you... and it's the Zonda variant 148450764203x^7

It's essentially 2.1 million dollars of pointlessness

This being said I'd still sell my retirement fund to drive one, and kill myself a minute into the lap completely satisfied I'm entering the perly gates on fire and in a Zonda!!

Come on...look at the roof intake. Sub zero, you can't pick up girls in that for legal reasons.

Sub-zero all day long. I don't care that it's not street legal. I can't afford one anyways, so it's irrelevant. It's ridiculously light, has a ridiculous amount of power from a ridiculous-sounding V12, and looks ridiculous.

Meh... These type super cars don't excite me.. I guess because they are so far away from ever becoming in reach.. They are designed only for going fast without regard for the real world.. Which is fine if you are in the right tax bracket... I get more excited about things I can reach for..
Of course I wouldn't mind taking it for a spin.. But I would probably end up being a stain on some curve wall...
