New Clutch Break-in?

So title pretty much says it all.

I put my new clutch in, and the manufacturer says

"Road test vehicle and never abuse a newly fitted clutch. Allow 750 mi break in "

...I barely drive my car (apr. 4,000 miles total), this thing will take forever to break in, whats your thoughts?

Will i damage it should i drive hard on it every once in a while?

I took it out for a test drive after the install to check it all out, runs good and feels good, but i caught myself banging through gears once or twice, forgetting about the "break-in". did i just damage it? What is the reason for the break in?

Thanks all!
