Illegal vs Legal Tints

First off I wanted to say that I did a search and could not find an older post that has the information I am looking for (maybe I am just blind), my apologies if this is a re-post.

I live in New Jersey and the law for tinted windows are that the "front windshield and front side windows cannot be tinted, but the back side windows and rear windshield can be tinted." This clearly talks about a 4-door though.

So my question is, what about coupes? People have tried to tell me you cannot have the driver's side window tinted, but thats not how it is phrased in the law. My main arguing point is that it simply cannot be illegal for coupes to have tinted windows in NJ.
Ridiculous question, I know, but I'm tired of all these "grey" areas in the laws. Especially when the cops can take advantage whenever they feel like it

For your state the windshield, driver side window, and passenger side window may not be tinted.

The rear triangle windows and the rear can be tinted.

Do it until you get caught, or not. It is illegal here, some people had illegal tint for years and other had it 2 months before getting a fix-it ticket or a fine. Same story with front license plate really.

For your reference... "front windshield and front side windows cannot be tinted." The FR-S do have front side windows I hope! The reason is that not being able to see the driver can be a hazard I guess (you hate tinted front windows when you ride motorcycles).

That's disappointing... So basically it IS illegal in NJ for a coupe to have tints. Looks like I am going to take my chances. Thanks for the info, greatly appreciated

Another thing to keep in mind is that you're much more likely to get fix-it ticketing on those issues (front plate, tint) if you're pulled over for any other reason.

So if you're not someone that gets pulled over, then you're much better off. But it's still illegal

I've actually been pulled over once just for no front plate. Explained it away to the officer by saying the only place to mount it would cover crucial air ducts. (Partly true, mostly not at all). He accepted my excuse and let me go with no fix-it.

In New Jersey: Coupe, Sedan, SUV, stretch limo, all the same - no tint on front and driver/passenger. You can tint every other window behind that any level of darkness. For a coupe, you only have the little triangles and the rear, for a Sedan you add in the rear passenger sides, for an SUV, Limo, van, etc - go crazy. Just keep the fronts clear.

The laws, for the most part, are in place to allow Law Enforcement Officers clear view into the car's driver. Safety is really just a secondary concern but they like to use that as an excuse as well.

As others have said, however, you don't get pulled over for it. If they get you for something else, they'll throw the tint violation in if they want to make your day worse. Here in NY, we can only go to 70% on the sides, whatever on the back. That really isn't worth doing especially since a lot of factory cars already come with 75%. It's a $100 per window fine (no fix-it tickets here as far as I know) but again, not a primary offense that they'd pull you over for so most of us just take our chances.

I haven't heard of anyone I know in NJ that's gotten a tint ticket, and I see so many vehicles that have tint all around. I have a white car, so any tint looks darker than it is. I only tinted the fronts 50 and rears 35%. I have a 20% windshield strip. I've also passed cops many times without a hitch.

Some people say you can't see 50% tint, but I say otherwise... And an added bonus is uv protection. My car has been noticeably cooler, even with 50s on the front two

New york you can tint the front window with a strip on top, you can't tint drive and passenger, everything else you can tint as much as much as you want. The purpose is so cops can identify the driver.

I'm surprised how tough some states are on window tint, most places in the midwest allow 35% all around, not sure about the windshield though.

I've had 10% all around on my car and a big 1% brow and never been questioned about it in KS or MO. Still waiting to show them the prescription for it though lol

Your point is invalid.

"Front side windows" are defined as the windows that are directly next to the side mirrors, so the driver can clearly see out the side mirrors.

You can have any type of tint BEHIND your front windows, according to current NJ law. That means the rear tiny windows, and the rear windshield.

That is the law and it is pretty clear cut to me.

-alex

Edit: I have all sides of my car tinted, but the fronts have a clear UV tint that is not a safety hazard. And CA law does allow for clear tint that provides UV/thermal protection.
