For 100-150 bucks, you are not going to get a NEW high quality unit...this is one of those products where you really get what you pay for...
You might be able to score a used V1 or upper level Passport (escort) for that much if you look around... |

The way I look at it, the device pays for itself after 1-2 near-cop experiences.

I have the Escort Passport 9500ix and the Laser Shifter ZR4.
Around where I live they like to use laser and although the 9500ix detects laser if it goes off it's likely too late. The shifter jams their laser and gives you a chance to slow down. If you think about it, all it takes is a couple tickets and increased insurance rates to pay for it. |

I don't understand the need for radar and laser detectors... Why not just drive the speed limit?

Sometimes you may not be aware that you are entering an area requiring reduced speed. Speed traps work for this very reason. In such a case, a radar detector can alert you to this before an officer does.

Find something used. I used to have Passport X50 and now I'm using Beltronic RX65. Both work pretty nice in terms of distance. For 100~150, you won't get the top brand as new.

Some people prefer not to drive the speed limit for various reasons. There is a large number of people in this demographic, as shown by the huge market for radar detection devices.

For about $200 you can get a refurb x50 or rx65. I've been seeing the same models on cl as well for <$200 on occasion.
I've had an rx65 (bought when circuit city was closing dirt cheap) for about 5 or 6 years now, its still fantastic especially after tweaking the settings (info is on forums). Skip whistler, cobra, etc. link is for escort radar ebay store, they list refurbs there http://stores.ebay.com/EscortRadar?_...p2047675.l2563 |
