If you're hyper-miling you're not abusing your 6th gear as much as you are the internals of your engine. The example I use is a 15 speed bicycle. On the flat and level you can zip along nicely in a high gear but when you come to the little hill you are going to kill yourself if you don't gear down. Lugging the engine does the same thing to the internals you do to your legs when you lug going up a hill on your bike. You're putting a lot of extra strain on it.

If I misunderstood you and I'm off base I apologize.

I abuse them all equally hard, but the rpm difference from 1st to 2nd makes 2nd take the most abuse from me. With the new clutch 1-2 can be violent with a little wheel spin, and 2-3 has a little chirp now.

I never do that. I just wanted to be the only person to vote for 6th gear. I only go 6th when 50+ mph and a relatively flat road.
