A few words come immediately to mind when you first see Derek Chu’s ( @derekchu88 ) Toyota 86. Clean. Tasteful. Gorgeous. Many more start flooding into your mind as you stare at the white beauty before you. To the unfamiliar eye, on the surface it may look like any other Scion FR-S on the road, but it’s the small details that draw you in and for those in the know, those little details mean everything. The first thing is the headlights. They are the coveted LED-equipped 86 headlights that Toyota saw fit to deny us here in the United States (except on the limited release 10 Series FR-S that is just hitting U.S. shores now). The Toyota badges and the JDM-style clear side markers are popular mods for fellow FR-S owners, but less commonly seen are the factory foglights, the factory tail lights with clear (not red) side reflectors, and side fender ‘86’ piston badges with red accents, all available on the JDM 86 or Euro GT86 but not offered here in U.S. dealerships. Only someone with substantial resources and meticulous attention to detail would go so far as to acquire each and every one of these items in order to truly convert their car from a Scion FR-S into a Toyota 86. Many FR-S owners will merely swap out the front and rear badges and then claim their U.S.-bought car is a Toyota, not a Scion. But few can more genuinely and deservingly make this statement than Mr. Chu.
