Twins vs Genesis Coupe from the perspective of GC owners

This is just hilarious to me. One person makes the comment that you need 285 tires for the twins to handle 300HP, and he doesn't think a large enough tire would fit anyway, because you need at least a 285 for 300 hp right?

Going onto another forum is very enlightening sometimes. Not so much what they are saying is incorrect (HP numbers and track times), but the bias is so strong when you get together with a group of people together who want to talk and validate their purchase. I don't think we're too different over here, but obviously our twins are the far superior car.

I actually like gen coupes, but that is a poor representation of their enthusiasts for sure. :/


I don't get why people think they're not allowed to like more than one car. If not like, at least respect. Oh well. Their forum at least reinforces my decision to pass on a gennie.

I liken the Gen goupes more to the Camaro and the Mustang than the twins. If I had to choose between the three? I'd choose the Gen.

As for why I got the BRZ compared to the Gen twin? I never could find a manual 3.8 to test drive and the dealer here in Chattanooga completely ignored me when I would come in looking for what I wanted. So, I never got to compare... But from what I heard the clutch would have been a HUGE pain point and I also imagine that the car would have had a "heavy" feel like a 370Z/G37. I like the light nimble feeling I get in the BRZ.

I think most true car enthusiasts likes all types of cars in general. I can appreciate the insane amounts of HP/torque in American muscle cars, the beauty/style of European cars, and the overall value in Japanese cars. If we had the $ to be like Jay Leno and Adam Carolla, some of us would.

I actually really like the GenCoupe 2.0T as well. I mean a 270HP turbo-charged RWD coupe with good looks and exponentially improving public perception & quality for ~$25k... Yes please more of those in the market please.

But for my money, the twins were just something very special where the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts.

Well I owned a 2013 Genesis Coupe 2.0T and after 14 months sold it for a BRZ. I think the above is spot on, for under $25K (assuming 2.0T manual) you get a pretty loaded car with lots of horsepower and torque in the Gencoupe. In a straight line in stock configuration the Gencoupe is noticeably faster. That said, the BRZ is definitely more of a drivers car. And by that I mean much better seating position in the car, much more responsive handling, much better gear box, better seats, and a much lighter more toss-able car. The NA engine definitely has better throttle response. People cross shopping these cars really need to go out on extended test drives with both and determine what is best for you. If you are someone who wants more straight speed and does not like the American muscle cars (Mustang, Camaro, Challenger) the Gencoupe is a great alternative.

The Genesis Coupe is in an odd category IMHO. It wants to be a GT car, but is not quite, and it also seems Hyundai is trying to compete with a car like an Infinity G37. It is rather good at lots of things, but master of nothing.

The front end is very polarizing and at some angles it looks aggressive and sporty. And at other angles it looks like a bloated catfish... I actually preferred the front end of the previous Gencoupe, but I get what Hyundai was trying to do. I find the BRZ/FR-S to be a nicer looking vehicle overall.

Did they ever re-design the interior of the gencoupes? The switch layout on the doors was somewhat retarded when I test drove a 2011 model and between the ergonomics of it and the blue lighting I was somewhat turned off to it. Granted with the power boost it's received since then it'd be interesting, but it still felt pretty big and the interior space isn't horribly more than what you get in the twins.

They revised the interior. Better materials overall with the 13. One odd thing they did do though was to add some pretty useless gauges below the A/C controls (the MPG and Torque gauges are 100% useless, the needles move around like crazy, not sure who thought this was a good idea):

Nothing new. It's all about what the people want from a car. Go to a S2000, MR2 Spyder, or Miata forum and they have overall positive thoughts about the twins.

Some people could see through the BS like on the GC forum. Some appreciate the twins.

Not sure if everyone is oblivious to this, but low center of gravity 99.9% of the time betters a car's handling on a typical street road or race track. That 0.1% is if it's scraping. Now that Toyota and Subaru are marketting this as one of the best inherent features of the twins everyone with a bloated pony car is saying it's a gimmick.

Everyone stop lowering your cars; It's a gimmick. Removing the sunroof and lowering the weight of the roof with a roof plug is a gimmick, you 240sx owners out there.
