Revworks turbo kit initial review

I picked up the FR-S today from Revworks with their prototype turbo kit they've been using my car to develop. The tuning isn't completely finished yet, so this will serve as a quick review of the experience thus far.

First let me say that in 14 years of building car projects, I've never done business with a better shop than Revworks. The guys there really know their stuff, they're straightforward and treat you fairly. I'm left wanting nothing at all from the process, and actually got a whole lot more than I had imagined initially. Matt is awesome to deal with, and Scott is very, very good at what he does. Needless to say, no one else is going to touch my car. I may be moving across country soon, and if so, I'll pay to trailer it to Orlando before I'll take it somewhere else. If you are looking for a shop in Florida, you really can't do any better.

I went into Revworks initially looking to purchase a K&N filter as my first mod. A little discussion with Matt and the seeds of boost were planted. Within a few days I was in the shop with a deposit.

Throughout the process Matt and Scott both were very helpful in determining what would suit my needs best. We decided on a Garrett GTX2867r with the Tial v-band turbine housing. The actual turbo that ended up on the car is a bit different, and I'm ashamed to say I don't actually understand why. I'm sure Revworks will have more detail in their thread, but it was something about being the equivalent of a GTX2871r (that Garrett doesn't, to my knowledge, offer off of the shelf). I also chose a recirculated downpipe (not so into the noise of a dump). The valves are both Turbosmart, the wastegate being a Hyper-Gate 45mm and the blow off being a Race Port. It uses DW 900cc injectors and 265l/h pump. The car is tuned with BRZEdit.

The fabrication work on the header is incredible. What impressed me even more though was the attention to detail on the small bits. Everything is very well mounted with nicely made brackets. As a complete nerd, I was happy to see that they had arranged the merge collector in a proper circular firing pattern, which I believe is the first I've seen to do that. Everything is heat shielded and header wrapped and very well sorted. The pipes are all wrinkle-black powdercoat. They've put a lot of time and effort into it and it shows.

Today the car received it's base tune, at 6.5psi. There are still some bugs that we'll be working out over the next couple weeks, but overall the car runs great. Driveability is good and the power is a huge improvement over stock. The boost response is absolutely instant, much better than any turbo car I've owned in the past, including the factory ones. The traction control light spends a lot more time on . The main issue at this point is a CEL from the stock MAP sensor (4-bar isn't installed yet) and a little hesitation at very low rpm, high load. I can't wait to see what this thing will do once it's all finished and tuned on the dyno! I think the plan is to get it finished and on the dyno within a couple weeks, so I'll post numbers once they're available.

I'll keep everyone posted as this goes along, but so far it's been awesome

Here are a couple (crappy cell phone) pics. I'll try to get better ones soon.

curious what kinda numbers u are getting. could sway me to pay the extra for a gtx over a gt.

also could be me, but at 6.5 PSI doesnt 900CC injectors seem a bit excessive?

Yes the final tune will be at 10psi once the clutch is in, 7psi until then. 6.5 is just for a base map until we can get it on the dyno. over the winter the car is getting a built motor, then 20+ psi. the 900's are a preemptive measure

i tried linking the pics from facebook instead of dropbox, they show up for me. let me know if they're still broken.

I went on a ride along with James tonight at the local car meet. Definitely a nice set-up can't wait for the tuning to be sorted out
