Is our car going to be called the F1Z?

For chassis code is the 86 going to be refered to as the F1Z?

Probably if there's a new chassis in the future, kind of like the S2000 and AP1 vs AP2 or RX7 FA/SA-FB-FC-FD.

Until then 86 is as universal as it will get, but we don't know if there will be a "next gen" 86, it may always be an 86 with no other designation other than what's on the badges.

Cause looking at the vins between brz/frs the only important parts that are in common are the F1Z, if you call it an 86 thats kinda slang and could be confused with the ae86. Next gen F2Z???

i wouldnt pay too much attention to vins. i think the ae86 had a vin with an ae88 in there or something. i think cars get called by the chassis code so i think if anything it would be called the zn6 (i think)

All they ones we got state side had the chassis code ae86, but the vins read "ae86"for sr5 and "ae88" for gts.

So yea I think zn6/zc6 is what this would be called

I agree it will probably be known as ZN6 or ZC6 as that is what the 86 and BRZ are identified as in Japanese VINs.

This is the first 11 digits of a Canadian FR-S w/manual transmission. Remaining 6 digits of the VIN is the serial number (I used 9 as filler).

F - Fuji Heavy Industries
1 - Could mean anything as it is probably code for vehicle type chosen by Toyota or Subaru. Probably means passenger car.

Z - Car line 86/GT86/BRZ/FR-S
N - Body type: N=Toyota/Scion Coupe, C=Subaru Coupe
A - Displacement: 2.0L Non-turbo, 'A' probably stands for Americas.

A - Trim level: A=FR-S, B=BRZ, C=BRZ Sport Tech
1 - Restraint type. Seat belts and airbag details.

X - Check digit: 0-9, X

D - Model year 2013
1 - Transmission type: 1=MT, 2=AT

999999 - Serial number

Yes, this is a good point, thanks for bringing it up. The wikipedia VIN page says that many manufactures use the 8th digit to identify the engine. The meanings of Digits 4-8 of a VIN will vary among makes but many will use the 8th digit for engine identification.

I got the description for the 8th digit from the BRZ service manual that has a VIN decoder. The 8th digit for a the 86/GT86/FR-S/BRZ is restraint type.

Honda is another example of where the 8th digit is not used to identify the engine. The 8th digit is used to identify trim level in a Honda VIN.

Based on the Honda VIN specification. The meaning of a digit does not change based on the vehicle delivery destination and are a global standard. This allows every vehicle manufactured to be identified uniquely and eliminates the chance that digit meanings get mixed up. This probably true of other makes as well.
