Handbrake is a free app that will let you convert one video format in to an other. I've been using it for years.

For ripping a movie, you may want to look at purchasing anydvd HD. It allows you to rip DVD's and Blu Ray disks. I have been using it for years as well and could not be happier. FYI, you can put the disk in to your computer and point handbrake to the drive that the movie is in and rip straight from the disk with anydvd HD.

With anydvd running you can rip and encode in one step with handbrake. Anydvd makes the disk appear as not being encrypted to the OS. So just point handbrake to the input of the DVD/Blu Ray drive and encode to what you want.

Enjoy :-)
